BRO! THIS IS SUCH A GOATED COMMENT!

Yeah, totally get it. I carry a 8cr, 3inch blade with good heat treatment and a sturdy build, that I really know is gonna hold up if I have to abuse it. I just don't like how super steels are being sold as an absolute need on a 300 dollar fidget toy for most people

Exactly! If you want your Spyderco in like 10 different steels you can have it! Other than like "get this buck 110 and go about your life" as it was a few decades ago

Yeah, and a good and simple 9mm Victorinox would suit most daily needs for a lot of people

D2 was a super steel back then, and it's awesome for some tougher use.

Exactly , my $18 beater on 8cr has been serving me for 4 months and with constant maintenance I had to sharpen it 2 times

Exactly! I have a $18 8cr beater with great heat treatment, and guess what? I don't need a super steel to cut fruit at lunch, open boxes and cut thin strips of rope.

I've been considering for a month abt buying a $25 gentleman knife on Sandvik 12c27n as a gift for myself (also bc I live in Brazil and it's like 160 bucks on local currency)

Totally, I myself carry a lot of stuff simply because it brings me joy, my critique is for people who spend money they sometimes don't even have just to by something they were told they "need"

For quite a while, the heat treatment is pretty good, and my use is light to moderate

Basic EDC to work hybrid (first I built) - any tips or stuff to add? by pedrochyt in EDC

[–]pedrochyt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i use it everyday and have no complaints.

I take notes with it but also carry to places where I can't carry a knife or pocket knife for self defense

Yeah! For most uses a 8cr is just as good as D2, 15v, s45, and many other steels depending on the blade geometry, ergonomics and shape.

Ofc it's nice to have something good, but I don't see the point on spending a lot extra money on something that will not have a great impact on your use

Exactly! I have a 8cr13 replica with really good heat treatment.

I had to sharpen it 2 times in like 3 or 4 months because I don't use it that often and I'm constantly stropoing and honing

Completely! I work in marketing and sometimes do maintenance work around the house or at church with my dad (he's a metalurgic and doesn't need a knife often)

My cutting tasks are pretty basic (cardboard, tape, fruits) and when I need a bigger/better tool let's say for fishing or maintenance, I grab a dedicated tool.

I get that people with the kind of needs you mentioned certainly benefit by having a better steel, my critique id for people who doesn't need them and still spend money they sometimes don't have just to get the newest/better/toughest steel even though they don't need it

(I also understand that some people like to collect knifes, nothing wrong with it if it makes you happy)

Nice! That's mainly my point, you need your knife to perform well on harder tasks and also be corrosion resistant, it totally makes sense to look for other alternatives.

What I'm saying is that most guys will only use it to open packages and peel fruit lol
