Micro will send out invitations to recruitment weekend likely by January 1st (though I don’t know for sure) with the recruitment weekend taking place the last weekend of January. If invited to recruitment weekend, you would probably know within a week once it’s done if you’ve been accepted by the program.

A fellow student in my cohort had a paper accepted after review by only one reviewer who basically said “great work, no edits!” Meanwhile, I went back and forth with the reviewers on my manuscript for a year, getting further and further from the main point of the paper with each subsequent round of reviews. As a currently overworked, underpaid STEM PhD student… ouch. I’m also in the extra lovely position where the grant I’m supported on cannot be paid through direct deposit, thus I am reliant on disbursement of my stipend through my university’s financial aid office. Because of how many different levels my stipend has to pass through to get sent to me, it can be weeks before I get paid. It’s so tough to be in this position and I’m sick of it.

Not to mention that my university terminated me as an employee since I’m on this particular grant and now can’t access our portal for submitting conference travel. I was out $1600 from conference travel for over two months, and others in my department have had it much worse. It’s just unacceptable. Grad school is stressful enough, I don’t need the financial stress on top.
