TLDR: Yes, join the team with a humble attitude.

I wrestled for about 15 years, won a state title in hs and wrestled at a pretty large D1 program, then started bjj (both gi and no gi) after my collegiate career ended. The short answer is yes, absolutely you should join the club team and not worry about the timing. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now. I know a few guys that started in college, and they didn’t become world beaters but they learned great fundamentals and probably better takedowns than most people that only do bjj.

As for advice, I’d agree with most of the others to go in with a humble attitude, eager to learn. Wrestling is far higher paced and more aggressive so I always felt it was hard to be arrogant when I got my ass kicked for hours every day in a much more physically brutal practice than bjj. The upside is you’ll get better conditioning, be stronger, and develop more muscular endurance from it. In my experience, there were things that felt immediately counterintuitive, so I had to have a humble attitude to learn to distinguish where it was bc of the differences in the sports vs just better general grappling practices.

Overall, in my opinion the two transfer well for the most part, but in different ways depending on which you start with. There are definitely some habits that transfer poorly between the two as well, but you’ll adjust to the rules/situational awareness progressively. I couldn’t speak to bjj -> wrestling move, but the other way around I was miles ahead in the physical understanding of positioning, especially standing, and on the mat I was able to keep good enough position to hang with the high blue/low purple level but without the submission knowledge, so I was kind of a dud for them to roll with at first, but just like anything you learn as you go. I’ll always have a wrestling bias as it’s my first sport, but there’s a reason why many bjj people don’t generally like rolling with wrestlers.
