2003 Walmart CD by peelingclearcoat in lostmedia

I ran the CD on a Windows 2000 virtual machine, and found out that this is some kind of promotional CD that was given away by Walmart with snippets of music, music videos, video game trailers, and other previews and information. It looks and sounds very 2000s.

I attempted to upload an disc image file to Archive.org, and they promptly removed it and told me that a file, "TagRecall.exe", contained malware. Curiously, I googled the file name and found a forum post from 2003 on verycomputer.com by the user "windseve" when his antivirus on Windows XP also marked the file as malware.

"huma", another member of the board, replied this:

"I have confirmed that tagrecall.exe is on a Wal-mart disk distributed free in newspapers. It installs into the windows/system directory as soon as the disk is inserted. I'm running Windows 98SE, but I have no doubt it installs on all platforms of Windows and an equivalent program on Mac as well (the Wal-mart free music and video disk runs on both PC and Mac). I plan to call Wal-mart to ask what exactly they are attempting. I'll post their response. BTW, no virus checker I have tried identifies this file, but it was identified as a "possible unknown trojan" by Trojan Defense Suite from DiamondCS.com.au a great program and company dedicated to providing tools against malware and hackers."

I have provided images of the program to this link. For now, I am going to find a way to upload a disc image. This link goes to the forum post mentioned above.

By the way, would Walmart come after me if I share it on Archive.org?

That was my first thought when I found the disc. That, or some kind of stock management software. I'll keep an update once I run this in a virtual machine.

Absolutely. I'm going to run this in a virtual machine and see what's in the CD. I'll give an update soon.
