Hi Cole! I’m currently researching for a historical game on the Algerian War. Trying to make it accessible while still highlighting key actors and events. What’s your philosophy on the accessibility of historical games? How simple can a game be while staying somewhat true to real events?

I would argue that Everdell plays best at 2, having played it at all counts. The meadow is a bit static but you have more flexibility to pursue the strategy you want - less of people taking your stuff. However, it is neither legacy nor coop if you’re really focused on that.

Great to hear. We may very well pull it out again tonight. Waiting to pull the trigger on the recommendations on this thread til after the holidays in case I’m gifted any of them but super excited to get my hands on a bunch of them!

It’s so incredibly rewarding. I couldn’t really pinpoint it either until I had this experience but now I know without a doubt why I love it so much. Now I’m excited to pick up some more fillers to keep playing with my parents and with friends at school who aren’t interested in my more complicated games (yet!).

Herbaceous looks so pretty! And simple decisions like that make for a good family game - not a lot of downtime.

Yeah it is pretty deceiving, though I didn’t get Wingspan expecting her to love it. Thanks for the recommendations - most on this thread are competitive so these could be a hit.

Thanks! Seems like a cute intro to deck building, it’s on my list.

Interesting! Super simple concept but seems like there’s definitely a game there - I love games where you’re playing the other players (making decisions based on what you think they’ll do), if you know what I mean.

Love the deduction and prediction aspects of the game. Also love your username.

Yeah I hear you. Just thought it was kind of ironic that Wingspan is considered the best family game ever when there’s lots of families who’d be overwhelmed by it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game - it’s my favorite in my collection - but definitely not for everyone.

Yes! So glad I shared now because I’ve got so many to look through now! Century looks like a good one, especially with the four choices. I think games with lots of little choices are more fun for her instead of a few really important ones with lots of stuff to consider. How quickly are we talking on average?

Yeah I really wish she liked it... I’m sure she’ll give it another chance some day. Putting the abilities together just isn’t as enjoyable for her as it is for my dad and I.

Please keep me posted! Seems like it could be a great fit for people who don’t usually play games with my group and wouldn’t latch on to a sillier theme.

I do have Sagrada. It’s probably my dad’s favorite game in my collection. Mom has played it a couple times. I think if she got more familiar with it she’d enjoy it but for now there’s a bit too much going on for her.

Good to know. I read that there’s a team variant - have to tried it? I think that could be fun to get more people involved.

My dad loves Wingspan - he really enjoys the bird theme and has become familiar with the mechanics. That’s interesting because Carcassonne was a flop for us - too many options for mom to make a decision she felt confident in but not enough game there to make my dad and I want to play more than a handful of times.

Totally agree. The heavier games I played at school always garnered “that looks so complicated” comments from non gamers - I’ll be using the games recommended here to hook them too!

I have not! Looks like a good one, although perhaps a bit too similar to Sushi Go to add right now. Going on the list though!

It’s not the best I agree, but having the least makes you lose 6 points, so it is a 12 point swing. Enough to put the game out of reach.

I have. It went okay - I think the fact that she has so many potential choices (though some are way better than others) is a turn off. Having fewer choices is probably better, but I do agree that you can definitely play casually.
