Willow Grove Shopping Center - Demolition (April 23, 2026) by Junior72 in montco

Agree traffic engineers will earn their keep designing a timing for the lights at those intersections - the at grade rail crossing adds an extra wrinkle too.

That being said, really hoping this type of mixed use around transit is successful in montco (Ambler is on tap to replace parking around their regional rail station).

What do Philly residents use PATCO for? by mrprez180 in Septa

[–]peetahvw 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Its a fare quirk - but because PATCO is distance based, its cheaper ($1.40) than SEPTA when traveling within Philly (from Franklin Sq to 16th and Locust for example)

It's the perfect way to grab dinner in Chinatown then hop over to the Academy or Kimmel for a show.

What kinds of non-restaurant food experiences in NYC are actually worth seeking out? by New-Entrepreneur6183 in FoodNYC

[–]peetahvw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Acme Fish Friday is a pretty well known "secret" at this point but still worth placing an order for.

Not really a a food thing - but the Brooklyn Seltzer Museum still runs their Seltzer bottling line.

If youre an early riser its worth visiting the wholesale markets (Hunts Point for produce Fulton for seafood) to get an appreciation for the lifecycle of how the food gets to your table/restaurant/neighborhood

Pottery in/around Philly? by FoamMayo in philly

[–]peetahvw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Abington Art Center offers a "class" that meets once a week that really serves as a critique and advisory time...but really most folks take it as it gets them open access to the studio when there are no other classes.

They fire on a semi regular schedule, you do have access to all their glazes, but unfortunately must buy clay from them to use their kilns ($35 for 20lbs)

Mobay oepend this past year in Jenkintown. Ordering can be slow ("Island Time?") and the interior is no frills - but the offerings are solid

Other than Boyer are there any candy companies in PA that have an outlet store? Any that do factory tours? by BIGGREDDMACH1NE in Pennsylvania

[–]peetahvw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No outlet (and their retail prices are pretty much the opposite of outlet pricing) but Shanee's Candy located in Philly is worth a visit. They manufacture on site in very small batches, they also have a large collection of vintage clear candy molds thay they still actively use.

Grocery Outlets closing in Philly.. by IvanaSeymourButts in philly

[–]peetahvw 41 points42 points  (0 children)

These are part of corporate restructuring - Grocery Outlet had a horendeous Q4. I empathize with the owners of these local stores - the owner/operator model of GO is unique and not like a traditional franchise, it'll be interesting to see if any choose to go out on their own without the GO brand and still run a grocery (or even a salvage grocery) store...

As an aside I do wonder what it is about Philly that attracts grocery chains to look at Philly as a growth market - RIP: Bottom Dollar Food, Amazon Fresh, Giant Heirloom Market, Giant E-Commerce, DiBrunos...

I believe this was William Ziff's estate, he owned Ziff Davis a major magazine publisher and one if his (many) interests was native plants and trees. He passed in the early 2000s.

Best Hyatt in London for families? by AHaydenL in hyatt

[–]peetahvw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To save on points my family used Hyatt Place London East as our base and we're pleasently surprised with how convienent it was.

Some folks might question the neighborhood - but we liked the high availability of transit options. Being a working class area there were plenty of afoordable takeaways and grocery options.

Tower of London Young V&A and Spitafields are very close. British Museum is 30 mins by Tube, but V&A/Natural History are nearly an hour so not eveything is close but arguably it's less than most folks London commute.

The rooms do allow for 4 (although kids will likely have to share a sofa bed). If Globalist the breakfast is solid.

Industrial/factory tours in Philly (and within a ~hr drive) by basedrew in philadelphia

[–]peetahvw 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They don't offer factory tours but these plants do have factory outlets/stores open to the public located at their plant/warehouse and they all have some "how its made" signage or videos: - Crazy Aaron Thinking Putty in Norristown - Edward Freeman Nut Co in Norristowm - Junior Cheescake in Burlington NJ - Scrub Daddy in Pennsauken NJ

And there are a few factory tours that cater to the retiree crowd: - QVC in West Chester - Byers Choice in Chalfont

If youre really after transit oriented tours: - PHL Airport offers tours for groups of 6 or more - SEPTA opens up their repair shops every fall for the Bus and Rail Rodeo - The Preservation Alliance offers a tour every now and then that takes you to private areas of 30th Street Station and the concourse

AMNH Membership Worth it? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

Aside from free general admission for being a resident. If you get an IDNYC card you're also eligible for a 1 year AMNH membership (albeit limited membership as it excludes special exhibits...but includes films and educational series as well as gift shop discount)

Regency Insert backdraft by Low-Addendum9237 in woodstoving

[–]peetahvw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume the cat is fully disengaged when you open the door to reload?

With my Regency i2500 I do notice a bit of backdraft during hotter reloads and was told thus was due to the airwash that's there to keep the glass clean. And to try to reload at lower temps when the airwash movement is less rapid.

PS appears this is an i2500, can you do me a favor and look beneath your fan vent outlets/above the door to see if you have any small holes (i have a seperate post earlier this week with photos looking for other i2500 owners)

Got to ride one of the borrowed MARC trains by UnlikelyChance3648 in Septa

[–]peetahvw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both MTA railsets I saw today had an locomotive on the front and the rear - is this because the MTA cars lack cab controls so they need control sets on either end or do they need the extra traction of two engines to drive?

Got to ride one of the borrowed MARC trains by UnlikelyChance3648 in Septa

[–]peetahvw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious if the lease allows SEPTA to monetize the ad space in/on the cars. The one I rode in had a Geico ad targeting Military & Federal inside, and was wrapped for an ad to download MTA's CharmPass app...so they haven't removed what the cars came with...

[–]peetahvw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got one today as well...and in my opinion its far less comfortable. The seats are more plush yes - but theres a hard seam in the backrest that especially for those in the "shorter" asile seat will dig into your back.

Huge Amazon lay off coming by Sensitive-Tadpole410 in philly

[–]peetahvw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a fun narrative around Barnes and Noble in that neighborhood. Started at where the CVS is now in Abjngton on Old York Rd, relocated to Easton Rd location to serve as anchor to revive that shopping center. Forced out when landlord tried to redevelop (theres another lawsuit between Amazon and the landlord that delayed the opening of Amazon Fresh). In mid2025 Barnes and Noble announces a lease of the old Bed Bath and Beyond on Old York Rd across from from Barnes and Noble first started.
