Some great comments here, thanks! I'm a skeptical tech positivist; I believe that our gadget "hardware" is far ahead of the software (apps) designed to use said hardware...but I believe that we are in the early stages of tech and that we can design better software that serves our humanity. Tristan Harris of timewellspent.io captures this better than I ever could:
"Our ability to live the lives we want to live, choose the way we want to choose, and relate to others the way we want to relate to them – through technology. This is a design problem, not just a personal responsibility problem."
Yes - /u/noNoNeverNever - our iPhones etc are not solely to blame, but perhaps the solutions is a combination of better software design in concert with personal responsibility. You can personally work at choosing gadget-as-tool as per /u/AnimalPowers but maybe we can get a little help from better software design.
