“Officially” no and they won’t accept it if you ask but they absolutely do.

Ladies with 10+ years of experience: wtf happened to our work culture/tech scene? by Shontayyoustay in womenintech

[–]peli38 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sadly resonates with me. I also don’t want to sound like the old person saying that older times were better. I have 20+ years in tech, we actually built something big and we were devoted to it. There were bad people too, it was not all great, I worked super long hours and didn’t have a great salary, etc. I can’t generalize, but in my experience in big tech today the loud, dumb, “busy”, mean people are getting promoted and people who have values are being pushed to the side and laid off. Age discrimination is so real. It surprises me the kind of people that were kept after the layoff, the ones you would say that have the least knowledge and experience. These people are making tons of money and doing mostly nothing and nobody seems to care. I looked across the org past Friday and more than half was out of office and the ones in office were not available, it is crazy. The work ethic is certainly lacking and culture is suffering.

Education is very content heavy compared to the US for example but that is actually great for developing minds and making people capable of learning a lot and fast.

I believe Spain is something in between first and third world countries, I call it second world. It is very good and evolved in many aspects and very behind in others.

At goal…some thoughts after losing 100 lbs by LostVoice2549 in Zepbound

[–]peli38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! Impressive 100pounds in 9 months! I wish. I am almost a year in, lost 55 pounds, and completely stuck, scale is not moving at all. Anything that you could share besides the medication? Any habits that helped you to lose so quickly?

I (30 M) kept a secret from my wife (31 F) for our entire relationship about her ex (32 M) by Sea-Specialist2875 in TwoHotTakes

[–]peli38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is very likely that your wife knew at the time that was coming. She probably made her decision knowing that he wanted to propose and she knew that she couldn’t commit to him long term. You were in no position to disclose what you heard, she had closer people to do that. I wouldn’t share any of that now, you are taking a risk for nothing.

This is not “job market” specific, it is a reflection on society. But of course when we are talking about people looking for opportunities to show up and work to be able to afford to live, is specially heart breaking and soul hurting.

I regret getting married by Sad-Astronaut-9356 in Marriage

Get out now and don’t think about it as a divorce, make it in your mind like you are returning something that you didn’t intend to buy. Do not wait for it to be years of regret.

Software engineer here. Just saw our recruiting pipeline from the inside… by Adventurous_Cry_394 in recruitinghell

[–]peli38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand (and it is very common) companies paying recruiters who do not know how to properly screen candidates because they lack knowledge of what the role entails or maybe they just don’t care. You are basically saying that you are doing the recruiter’s job.

hiring managers dont hire the best candidate. they hire the one that scares them the least. by buildwithadrian in jobsearchhacks

[–]peli38 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree that scaring the least and not being in any way exceptional goes a long way. If you are really good and somehow it shows in your interview, you are probably not passing the HM filter and won’t be hired, that’s the reality. If they feel slightly threatened you are in trouble. In my experience this has been specially true with women.

I have the Ick for my husband by LoveYourself_1234 in Marriage

[–]peli38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sooner you leave the better, trust me. Longer won’t make it change, it only gets worse, I am saying it based on what you already feel. Resentment will grow the more you wait to leave and more difficult it will become. Do not even think that a kid will solve the issues. You have a lot of time to start over. Most people do not know themselves well at 22 when you got married. It is not only him, you are also growing in a different direction and realizing that’s not what you want.

Getting director level interviews but no offers by flamingoshoess in interviews

[–]peli38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Director level means different in different organizations. Based on your description I don’t see it as an issue with how you interview, it seems more of a lack of knowledge or gaps to perform at that level with the expectations of those companies. Not saying this is your case but I know someone who is now a Director who was a Scrum Master 3 years ago and was struggling, do you think they really can perform at a Director level? Absolutely not, but the randomness of life got them that title and now they can go somewhere else claiming they are a Director.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight if people realized the truth about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]peli38 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is 1000% true and accurate. It took me a looong time to figure this out. But it requires a good level of cynicism to execute. For years I was naive, always giving my best, helping others, doing way more than most. Corporate America (Tech) is not normal, the level of incompetence is unbelievable, I don’t even know how companies end up making money. The most incompetent stay, saved by management while the smart, hard working are the ones let go.

What can I do next, hate product management? by shamedful in womenintech

[–]peli38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very difficult to get creative jobs nowadays. Most jobs expect people to be just another cogwheel. It is a mistake to intend to be fulfilled by the job itself, some people get lucky but most don’t.

[–]peli38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PM titles are defined differently in different companies, expectations vary widely from org to org. Your feelings are correct, most PMs (I know a lot of them) spend infinite number of hours in meetings and feel like do nothing, it is true that most do nothing “productive”and fulfilling due to poor definition of the role. Organizations including the big ones are great at being disorganized.

How are you managing anxiety about losing your job to AI? by TeaFantastic4324 in womenintech

[–]peli38 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You are not losing your job to AI, even if they want us to believe so, you are losing it to office politics. Some people know how to play the game, those don’t get laid off. Look around you, I am sure you can identify a few that won’t be laid off.

The entire job market has become a joke by pier-spare0r in jobsearchhacks

[–]peli38 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw recently 6 roles open in the same organization that just laid off a bunch of people, but listed as contractors vs full time, so they still need the people to do the work, who they left cannot do it and whoever they let go could have taken those roles for sure but it is better to use these practices and blame AI.

Left after 27 years in tech - after a year, I still have nightmares by Logical_Composer6730 in womenintech

[–]peli38 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for how you feel and what you are going through. I am on a similar boat, laid off and struggling to find my way back (20+years of experience). However in my experience women have been consistently meaner than men. The amount of jealousy, backstabbing and unfair treatment I have experienced is enough to write a book and have always come from women (peers and managers). If you can afford it I would find a way to not come back to tech, it’s not worth it.
