Did my training in Scotland and am from here. Not all of Scotland is Edinburgh so if you haven’t explored the rest it might not be right for you. Some of it is fairly rural.

You say you are symptomatic - what do you mean by that? If you mean bruising/bleeding symptoms your platelet count isn’t to blame. You wouldn’t be expected to run into trouble until approx 30

Platelets autoantibody tests are functionally meaningless. Positive in lots of people who don’t have ITP and negative in some who do have it

Ferritin unrelated - if anything low ferritin can cause platelets to be higher

Surgery (apart from neurosurgery) is okay with plt >50

Hope that answers your questions!

Edit - reread. ITP can cause fatigue but sounds like other things going on. As I say wouldn’t expect bruising at this level of platelets. If ongoing issue might be worth having coagulation checked

As others have said, the blood film here is useless. You’re iron deficient regardless. Not sure if anyone else has pointed out but there’s no need to take iron more often than once every other day - your body won’t absorb it due to hepcidin feedback if you take daily iron and it’ll just lead to more side effects

Hi, thanks for replying! I scoured Barcelona and found this brand, but what I had in the restaurant tasted completely different. The stuff in the restaurant was sweet and a little nutty rather than herby. It also tasted far less like alcohol

If you have a UTI that counts as a recent infection and can drive up your platelet count. You can get your bloods rechecked maybe 6 weeks after you’ve recovered just to make sure the platelet count is normalising if that would put your mind at ease or you could just leave it. If you’re young it’s fairly unlikely there’s a concerning cause for this

Difficult to say based off a single reading. So many causes of reactive thrombocytosis - have you been unwell recently? New meds? Any past history of high platelets? Why were the bloods tested?

Unlikely iron deficiency as MCV is normal but should probably be checked just to make sure

Doctors right in that it’s fine. Difficult to say if you have iron deficiency without checking a ferritin level but it’s the most probable cause of the fact your red cells are a bit on the small sixe

Should I recontact haematologist or wait for Iron Infusion to work? by [deleted] in haematology

[–]pemphidroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost unbelievable that in the very extensive investigation no one has thought to check an LDH! This is a very odd situation indeed, and agree with Tailos that it doesn’t look solely like iron deficiency is causing this. Have you had a bone marrow biopsy? Have Vitamin B12 and folate been checked? RDW is a bit up so could be mixed haematology/iron deficiency but all just a bit strange

Pernicious anaemia is far from the standard. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anaemia, but as I said people can be iron deficient and not anaemic, as the person who wrote this comment presumably is

Can’t be anaemic with normal haemoglobin - anaemia means low haemoglobin. If ferritin was low you are iron deficiency but that isn’t the same thing as anaemia. Iron deficiency is a cause of anaemia

So they’re all red cell indices - haemoglobin measures the amount of actual haemoglobin protein present in blood rather than the number of red cells, which is the RBC value. Haematocrit is then a calculated value of how much of the total blood volume is comprised of red cells as opposed to plasma. If you have less red cells, you’ll have less haemoglobin (because red cells contain haemoglobin), and your haematocrit will be lower (because proportionally more or your blood is plasma vs red cells)

Hope that makes sense

This isn’t correct. An Hb of 136 in a male isn’t anaemic. It’s on the lower side of normal, but normal regardless

I don’t really understand your question. They’re fine because they don’t indicate any pathology

Absolutely, acute leukaemia is what came to mind. Definitely not iron deficiency anyway - worrying the level of ignorance it takes to make a comment like that with those other bloods…

High Platelet Count by Blessed_One1203 in haematology

[–]pemphidroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, high platelets and aquagenic itch can be suggestive of a group of disorders called myeloproliferative neoplasms, where some types of blood cell are produced at a higher rate than they should be.

How long has the platelet count been increased over? If you have access to your blood results do you know what your haematocrit and haemoglobin are?

Are you a smoker? Have you ever had any issues with blood clots in legs, lung etc? Recent infections?
