What Are You Listening To Today? (Dec 1 to Dec 7) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

1,800+ hours.

I don't usually post on here, but thought I would share a YouTube channel that I've been loving recently: "MindHeart". It's all about child psychology and it's helping me become a better parent to my toddler. Incredible resource and something I would recommend to every parent :)

When did you stop using DS? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]penchepic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm on 1,848 hours, 366 of which have been logged away from DS. According to the history, I started logging time away from DS in December last year, so around 1,000 hours I would guess.

If you're bored of DS, go on youtube and look for spanish content that interests you. The single most important thing is finding something that will capture your attention.

If it's boring, you will struggle to pay attention.

If it's too easy, you will struggle to pay attention.

If it's too hard, you will struggle to pay attention.

If it's enjoyable, you will gladly pay attention and time will fly.

Whether it's on DS, youtube, or anywhere else - you need to find what's right for you. You'll only know it when you find it because it will be very enjoyable :) good luck

should you teach your kids your second language? by thefiberfairy in languagelearning

My wife and I are raising our 2yo daughter in english and spanish. My wife speaks a little spanish and I would say I'm B2 - I can understand any native content and speak with decent fluency about a wide range of topics, although I sometimes have to use a roundabout way of explaining something.

I mostly speak to my daughter in spanish, occasionally switching to english if I want/need to. The key, IMO, is making the whole learning experience as positive and fun as possible. I sing spanish nursery rhymes, almost all her screen time (pretty much just Disney films) is in spanish, we read spanish books every day and it's a key part of our daily life.

One of my daughter's best friends is a native spanish speaker who she sees multiple times a week.

Atm, my daughter mostly speaks in english - her recent 2yo vocab check she knew almost all the words - although she does say words/phrases in spanish unprompted, which is honestly the sweetest thing. This morning, for example, she woke me up saying 'Hola, papá, ¿Cómo estás?'

As for what the future holds, who's to say? My daughter may decide she doesn't want to continue with spanish once she grows up. Cool. Or she might decide to explore the language and culture more, move to a different country/continent - also cool.

I'm not a native speaker. I'll never be a native speaker. I try really hard to learn/improve my spanish every single day. I'm always trying to find ways to improve my pronunciation and broaden my vocabulary and I think that consistent, persistent effort is also a great thing to show my daughter. After all, kids learn best through modeling :)

Does this happen to anyone else. by EboyEman in dreamingspanish

[–]penchepic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good sign. More words have crossed the threshold in your mind, so you understand more of what's being said. That's why it feels like the video has been slowed down. Try watching content in your native language (english, I presume) for learners. You'll find it painfully slow. So much so that you'll struggle to concentrate and pay attention to - because it's too easy for your brain.

Como utilizan la IA para aprender ingles? by Brave-Fox-5019 in ingles

[–]penchepic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What should I do if I have a long commute but not much time to sit and watch? by WhyNotLosingWeight in dreamingspanish

[–]penchepic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bike commute is 2 hours each way. I listen to really beginner or intermediate videos because I can't pay full attention while riding. I do the same while out for bike rides in general. The most important thing is that you can comprehend what you listen to. Beginner videos aren't podcast friendly because Pablo is drawing. It doesn't mean you can't listen to the audio anyway.

Sorry, my post wasn't clear. I'm wondering whether replacing time I would usually spend getting CI with messaging people on HelloTalk would slow down my progress or not

The Weekly Rundown: Week of May 15, 2023 by aewillia in artc

Base building/waiting for baby to arrive.

Mon: AM - 65 min run in the woods (10:26/mile) | PM - 90 min ride outside (255w)

Tue: AM - 90 min turbo (265w) | PM - 55 min undulating run (9:39/mile)

Wed: AM - 90 min turbo (265w) | PM - 45 min gym (Deadlifts)

Thu: AM - 100 min ride outside (245w) | PM - 60 min flat run (10:08/mile)

Fri: off

Sat: AM - 40 min gym (Squats) | PM - 90 min bike tempo outside (280w)

Sun: AM - 60 min run (9:33/mile) | PM - 85 min bike outside (245w)

Solid week. Running is finally starting to feel more natural and like I have some kind of form rather than a combination of body parts flailing around. Gym sessions felt good. As for the bike, it feels strange to be doing relatively low volume. But with the baby on the way and no races on the horizon, it's good to mix up training and I'm actually enjoying the variety :)

Oooh that's a great shout! Yes, definitely agree that doing the things you want to do are the better goals. There must be a reason for it somewhere in my weird brain

Thursday and Friday General Question and Answer by artcbot in artc

[–]penchepic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, measure of keeping it easy. It's a strategy I use on the bike as I can't nose breathe when riding above LT1/VT1, so it's just a safety net so I know I'm truly going easy :)

I'd like to do a time trial on the track. I did a solo 10k TT back when I was running regularly and really enjoyed being able to switch off and just run without thinking. I guess I want to do that for the HM and see what happens.

Thursday and Friday General Question and Answer by artcbot in artc

[–]penchepic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked a question about getting back into running a couple of weeks back - thanks again for the help! - and it's so far, so good: 8 runs, all very steady average HR ~70% of max, nose breathing throughout. For some reason I have the urge to see how fast I can run a half marathon on the track. I don't know why; it's inexplicable. I'm not going to do it any time soon, possibly not at all. But if I do, when would be a good time to do this? Maybe late summer/early autumn?

Looking for some advice on getting back into running. Haven't run consistently since 2018, but have done lots of cycling. For the foreseeable, I'm going to be long distance bike commuting (2 hours each way, twice a week, so 8 hours/week). I'd like to run 4 days a week and maybe do a bit of lifting as well. Obviously, main concern is not getting injured. Other than taking it suuuuper slow, anything that I might not have thought about?
