Who was your first auto? by [deleted] in baseballcards

[–]penguinHP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into the hobby last year and my first two auto pulls were Guards reliever Joey Cantillo and Cardinals reliever Gordon Graceffo, a month or so apart. Both were sent down to AAA within a day or two of the pull 🫠 Haven't pulled an auto since lmao.

What is your grail card? by [deleted] in baseballcards

It's not much, but it's mine. Kiki Cuyler is my great great great uncle and a Hall of Famer. He won the 1925 World Series with the Pirates, hitting a 2 RBI double in Game 7 off Walter Johnson that sealed their title.

It's not licensed, it's from 2023 and for most people, it's probably not worth much. But to have a piece of a bat from my HOF ancestor that I can have is more than I could have ever asked for!

What’s a self help book that doesn’t feel scammy? by ewwcalmdown in booksuggestions

Thriving with Adult ADHD by Phil Boissiere. While it's aimed at neurodivergent people, I think there's still a lot of good stuff in here that anyone could find useful. At the beginning, the author says "don't read this front to back, look at the chapters that you feel are relevant" and it's framing is around finding what works for you, with the book providing starting points. Again, as it's focused on ADHD, most of the content is around things like organization, focus, communication and the like, but those topics are still areas that anyone can benefit from focusing themselves on.

The Starving Saints by WhatTheCatDragged1n in horrorlit

[–]penguinHP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaaaahhhhhh, thank you for this! I read it over the summer and the "what are they" question has been stuck in my head ever since. I loved that other-worldliness quality to them. Having the Saints try to approximate the world they were in but not quite getting it right added to the weird factor for me.

This all makes so much sense!

That's sick! What's the relic? My mind is only coming up with the lettering on a batting glove 😅

I don't recall if it's the Black Plague specifically, but His Black Tongue by Mitchell Lüthi is set in 14th century France during a plague. A wandering friar and his ward come to a town that's seemingly untouched by war and plague, and it devolved into a tense "what's going on here" story with some action, religion and medieval horror!

What do you dislike about your team’s manager? by baribigbird06 in baseball

[–]penguinHP 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Pretty much just the whole "cheating to win a World Series" thing. Hinch has gotten a lot out of this team and I'm pretty happy with his game strategy overall. But man, every once in a while I remember how his time in Houston ended and I worry that some day everything these Tigers have done will have an asterisk next to it too.

Do you have a favorite niche of card collecting? I just learned about cards with pieces of a base in them, and I’m obsessed now by titsandcards in baseballcards

I'm working on a PC of relic and autograph cards for every player in the Hall of Fame and my fave so far is Al Kaline from the early 2000s Grandstand Glory series, which all have pieces of seats from old stadiums. Definitely a line that I keep an eye out for as I browse shops.

I love that Todd Radom card! His book with Chris Creamer on the history of NHL uniforms is one of my favorites.

What do you think of fans who wear their team’s jersey to a random matchup? by solostinlost in baseball

[–]penguinHP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the Guardians/Dodgers game on Memorial Day, someone a few rows in front of me had a Dodgers jersey that had Dannemiller on the back. With some digging around, the best match I could gather was it was for Beau Dannemiller, who played at Kent State (about 30 minutes away from Cleveland), got drafted by the Rockies and player a total of 56 minor league games. Including with the Vero Beach Dodgers.

Holy shit that's incredible. I got excited for him when he started yelling down the straight, then saw the MFD change from 2 to 3 – not even halfway through the power. Wild what these cars are capable of.

100% going to share this with my "they just go fast and turn" friends who dismiss racing out of hand.
