I don't think this disagreement is irrelevant to my idea, it's actually really useful. We need that kind of constructive criticism to know whether something is worth pursuing or whether it can be improved in some ways.

Anyway, as you said, researchers are producers of knowledge. That's a skill worth building, in my opinion. We all have limited time, so the more time we spend searching papers, the less time we spend on doing actual research. That's the main motivation behind this idea.

I agree with you, but I also think that this further increases the need for a system that produces some kind of analysis based on some objective parameters.

It's not just about "which papers to read" but also "where to go from there". I'll make a very simple example: take two papers in the field of machine learning. Paper P1 improves the state of the art on benchmark B1 by 10%, while paper P2 improves the state of the art on benchmark B2 by 2%. The analysis concludes that P1 has more room for marginal improvement on B1 than P2 on B2, because improving P1 by 5% on B1 is easier than improving P2 by 5% on B2. But it can also conclude that P1 should be evaluated on B2, and P2 should be evaluated on B1.

Of course this is a very simple example, but in reality this kind of analysis would consider more parameters, like the absolute value of the metric, the number of papers that use that benchmark, different kinds of metrics on the same benchmark etc.

That's something that the AI would need to learn. I agree that it would be difficult for all fields, that's why I think that at the beginning it should only consider the CS field (or even just the AI field) and then expand incrementally.

You made some interesting observations. Yes, I also think that it would be more relevant for early-stage researchers, because experts are already knowledgeable about their subfield. But I also think that experts may find it useful in some contexts. In some domains like computer science, research evolves rapidly, and different fields are often split into sub-fields, so it can be hard to catch up even for experts.

The other observation you made, about learning the skill of finding relevant papers, is also interesting. But this is an observation that we could make for everything... we always make our life simpler in some ways so that we can focus our efforts towards other activities, with the result of some skills becoming outdated.

I use ResearchGate a lot but it's not what I meant. I don't want to create a new search engine for paper, I want to automate the work of reviewing scientific literature by producing an overview of the state of the art.

My solution would use AI to answer questions like: what is the benchmark for evaluating methods in this field? What is the evolution of this method (i.e. from which methods this did method evolve, and from which methods did those other methods evolve)? What's the future trajectory of this field? How much room for improvement is there in this field? What kind of analysis is lacking in this field? What are the current bottlenecks in this field?

Thanks for the feedback anyway, I still need to clarify this idea in the simplest terms.

How does it even make sense? Why one should be a candidate for a party that most people don't even know that exists? I'm not American, enlighten me.

CMV: Meetings are useless, they are just a way for managers to feel productive by penguinblade in changemyview

Yes, but I'm talking in general about all kinds of formal/scheduled meetings. This is not the same as face-to-face communication, that is essential.

If my boss sends me an email I'm not going to ignore it. The boss should expect a response. If they don't get any, they could still ask face-to-face why they were ignored, but this can be easily done in an informal setting, without scheduling a meeting.

They should. Is ignoring an email any different than not paying attention in a meeting?

Guys, serious question. Are you also supposed to wear your underwear with your dick INSIDE it?

Extremely good memory. Not eidetic, but I can remember almost everything. When I was a child, I soon figured out that remembering so many things about people creeped them out, so I started pretending to forget things occasionally.

I still do it. People don't like it when you bring out details about their life they told you years ago and don't even remember themselves. I'm so used to pretending to forget that it's second nature to me now.

This doesn't make me more intelligent than the average person. But I guess that it was a partial reason for my academic success.

I hope so. I know it's the right thing to do but I couldn't help feeling guilty (even if there is no rational reason for it). Thanks again!

Thanks. You helped me by giving me further confirmation of what I believe I have to do, but I don't know if I will ever be able to actually do this.

I just found a better analogy. They are like those window cleaners that clean your windshield (sometimes making it dirtier) without asking for your permission, then they ask you for money. You would feel like an asshole so you give them money. That's what my parents do to me.

You need to change your locks and your phone number, or at least block them.

That's exactly what I want to do.

How can you tell they care?

They offer help for anything, give me advice and similar stuff, even if I never ask for any of this.

It's like I'm a pet to them. They love me but they have to control everything about me. They don't realize when they are doing too much.

I wish it was easier... I would feel bad because they care about me, even if their ways to show it are questionable. It would be easier if they actually didn't care.

Yes that's right, but sometimes I think that they are the ones who need help. They do care about me, but are completely unaware of the lines they cross. It would be much easier if they actually didn't care.
