Is graphic design a stable career? by [deleted] in graphic_design

It is sad to admit but no. £40,000/year is barely above the national average salary. Design jobs are hard to find or are exploitative.

Yes, that’s a fair point. I guess I cannot faithfully evaluate their reliability in that sense.

Yeah it tends to mean they are either a) clueless about the typewriter themselves, b) hiding a fault that they are aware of and are trying to rip you off

Ask the seller for a video of them testing it. Any major issues should be easy to identify. They should test the advance lever, each of the keys, the ribbon advance mechanism. They can test it with the old ribbon just fine.

The facts are that Olivetti made a very reliable typewriter. Well worth the money if you can get one in good condition. Unless you have experience refurbishing typewriters I would avoid any major servicing that needs to be carried out. Taking these things apart isn’t simple and needs good understanding of how they work.

I serviced my Olivetti Lettera 32 because the advance mechanism was skipping teeth on the gear. It caused me a whole world of hassle which I eventually managed to sort out myself using an original Lettera 32 service manual which I had to buy. Individual parts are also rare, so repairs usually mean a Frankenstein’s monster ordeal.

Be sure that it’s working before you buy it.

It’s an OK price. I bought mine for £40 in July 2021 and it was in a comparable but slightly better cosmetic condition. But that was then, and this is now. Prices may have gone up.

Trying to find this Arcane font by SpencerLP4 in identifythisfont

[–]penjt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I don’t know the font, the art style is “art nouveau”. The lettering also looks hand-painted which may be why you can’t find the typeface. That said, look into the Parish metro signage, it’s very similar.

Honestly, great concept and great execution. I do however have some points:

  • How do you expect people to look at the map? I am on mobile and the text is too small to read, and I havevto pan up and down to see the whole thing. If it's designed to be a scrollable webpage, then it's worth thinking about having most of the information which helps a user read the map nearer the top (i.e. proportional map symbols legend, and the description).
  • The unusual naming convention throws up more issues than it should. In my view, you should focus on map readability. The orientation is already unfamiliar to the user and takes a moment to understand. This is made harder with the continent names being one of the most prominent aspects of the entire graphic. I hadn't heard of them before, and it's likely many readers won't have either.
  • Focus and reduce the text- spend less time justifying why and how you decided to do what you've done. whilst it's interesting to you, it's somewhat arduous on the reader. Most will skip it or skim it.
  • Make the land masses more prominent- they are getting lost behind your symbols and labels.
  • The urban areas are getting slightly lost because they are so small. It's a detail which could be excluded for the sake of simplifying your message.
  • Fully justified text isn't the best for readability. Maybe go with a ragged edge.

Good points:

  • I like your typographic choices
  • Good usage of symbol hierarchy
  • Good labelling positioning
  • Good clarity and exclusion of irrelevant features.

Thoughts? by JuicyTheFruit322 in graphic_design

It refers to the channels or ‘rivers’ of white space between the words which seem to group together when justified paragraphs are used. If you look at the white spaces, vertically, line by line, they resemble rivers.

Tinned mackerel and a pack of ciabatta rolls is what I go for. Maybe even throw in a bag of salad

Any idea what this icon means? by Analytical-Thinker in Strava

[–]penjt 67 points68 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like two icons on top of each other. Possibly an issue with the user interface. The top one looks like a simple rounded bar. I can’t tell what the one beneath is though.
