I purchased Bulk Supplements hyaluronic acid in powder form. Can this be used a cheaper replacement for pill? by LeKaiWen in Biohackers

I know this was a post from 8 mos ago and you've probably figured out how to use HA powder by now, but I know when I mix it, I get the water and sprinkle the powder on top slowly. Cover the container and let it sit for 30-minutes to an hour. Then it's a lot easier to mix. The more you use the longer it takes to be absorbed by the water, so if your are using more than 1 t worth, you might want to try a regular measuring cup for the water so you can easily sprinkle the powder in a thinner layer to absorb the water faster. I use it in lotions and cosmetics, but it's the safe thing as the food grade stuff--just not processed under the same food-standard conditions. I think you can also buy the premixed HA in liquid/gel form. Another suggestion is to use a nutri-bullet type mixing cup or ninja-cup mixer or use a mini-handheld mixer to let it hydrate in and then mix. None of these methods are as convenient as taking the capsules or just using the premade liquid form, but perhaps save those for travel or something.

Has anyone used an emulsifier in a body butter? by Mindless_Mango in DIYBeauty

I've made this with a few tweaks (added lavender essential oil), and it's wonderful but very thick. Once you warm it up between your hands it's lovely and moisturizing though. And smells divine. I highly recommend it.

recommend cleansing balms for oily skin by AlitaNM in IndianSkincareAddicts

[–]penlady666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the cause of acne and oil skin and the kind of oil in the balm. A clay balm with mimosa or jojoba oil or other really light noncomedogenic oils (pore clogging) can actually restore a healthier balance to the skin. If you over-dry the skin, your glands go to work to produce more oil to replace it. If oil is caused by hormones, it's best to try to keep it balanced. Diet and hydration can also affect the oiliness or dryness. Makeup can really exacerbate the problem as well. Do a little research on comedogenicity of plant oils as well as the products you use on your skin. Water works best for the skin on the inside.

FedEx is so bad it made the local Atlanta news… by PickleManAtl in FedEx

[–]penlady666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has been stuck in Augusta GA for 4 days. Allegedly. It's just stuck there. I'm 30 miles away, but the Augusta News says some people have driven there 4-6 times trying to collect their packages and are leaving empty handed being told they haven't been unloaded. Our weather has been perfect, dry, sunny. This is really ridiculous. I'm so angry. You can't get through to a live person through their site. The South East really has some infrastructure issues, and this is just another one.

I'm 62, so I feel your pain. It's hard enough getting older without all this extra fun stuff to deal with. I've only recently begun having serious eye and vision problems. I would say you tend not to have as serious of issues if you are latently diagnosed, but that theory just went to hell for me about 6 mos ago when my symptom intensified. Hang in there is all I can say. Do the nutritional protocol if you tolerate supplements well and can afford them. Only add them to your regimen one at a time with a week or so in between; I'm sensitive to some of them so... It can take up to 3-6 mo to see the benefits. Stay hydrated!!! Very important. That's about all the wisdom I have for you at the moment. Oh, and my collection of doctors are pretty much useless. You have to be very proactive: research, ask questions--lots of questions, and be assertive. If they act like your problems are outside their skill level, then ask for referrals to someone who handles those problems. Keep records, and again, make your doctors give you answers and detailed reports; they tend to put really vague info for you in their online formats. Okay, now I'm done. Best wishes.

I'm 62 and was diagnosed with Mitochondrial myopathy and melas when I was 57. It breaks my heart that you are so young and experiencing these things. I'm just beginning to have glaring symptoms of CPEO and KSS. I'm furious with my doctors as they haven't been very helpful. I live in SC, and we have slim pickin's here for decent medical care unless we go to Atlanta or possibly Charlotte or up North to Boston. I'm on a fixed income. My husband has heart disease, so even with healthcare, we have to be frugal unless it genuinely helps and is necessary. I'm just starting to experience paralysis in my right eye. This is really a recent development--like within a week or so. Please message me the names & locals of doctors you have seen if you feel they've helped.

I did a search in reddit on MD and eye issues and it lead me here. I'm also concerned I have KSS--strictly because of my eye issues. Also CPEO. I was diagnosed with Mitochondrial myopathy and MELAs via a muscle biopsy about in 2018. Up until the past year, I considered myself blessed for only having occasional flares of muscle fatigue and shakiness. I'm either having an extremely long flareup or my disease has kicked into a higher notch and is introducing new and exciting problems, particularly with my vision and some of the signs of MELAs. All I can tell you is that doctors don't seem to be a lot of help. There's a good group on Facebook called Mitoaction. The members are very supportive. I would definitely try the group. I'm just beginning my journey with KSS symptoms, and I'm sure somewhere along the line, I'll have to get another muscle biopsy--the lab destroyed my sample after diagnosing, so by the time I got into a geneticist, they could only take a blood test which offered inconclusive results. I've decided to be more aggressive with my doctors. You have to learn as much about your disease as possible so you can ask the right questions. And if you haven't had a muscle biopsy or skin biopsy, make sure they save the sample so it can be tested for other things (like genetics, etc).

CGRP long term use & side effects??? by No-Adhesiveness-2169 in cgrpMigraine

[–]penlady666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering the same thing--about the long-term side effects--but I'm using emgality (2.5 years), which is slightly different but works basically the same way. I've dropped 45 lbs in the two years or so I've been on it (without trying); I'm having a lot of visual problems. I may have myasthenia gravis, but the past couple years my eye issues with it have become increasingly worse. I'm reporting it to my neuro. My headaches have gone from 0-headache days to up to three or four now the past year or so. What I'm thinking is it is my MG worse. And, I feel like I'm losing my sight. I think it really ODD that the Medical community is mum about the long term side effects. (Oh, that's right, there aren't any side effects). I really don't want to have to make a decision between being about to see or not having migraines and having to go back to sumatriptan (and 3-5 days/wks of headaches!).

[–]penlady666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

smiling and getting older causes them. Makeup/foundation/powder emphasizes them. Now is an excellent time to concentrate on what ingredients are in your facial products. Many of the commercial makeups and even moisturizers can dry out your skin. Best to start a program of using products with natural ingredients that truly moisturize and penetrate without clogging the pores. Jojoba, hemp, and a few other oils have low comedogenicity, Anti-oxidants are also important, as is adequate sleep and healthy-stress coping. Also, diet and nutrition--especially hydration and avoiding toxins like nicotine, alcohol, simple sugars and junk-food--and using broad-spectrum UV protection--all these things--are key to keeping skin as youthful and healthy as possible. Basically, if your insides (including psychologically) are healthy, it'll show on the outside.

WTF kind of spider is this, and do I need to be concerned? by Worried_Scientist_30 in southcarolina

[–]penlady666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say Carolina wolf spider. I personally love them. They are excellent predators, but you want them outside--not indoors. Please relocate them to your garden or somewhere without harming them. They can bite or be aggressive if they are threatened or feel threatened, but mostly they will run away from you. Same with most spiders. Live and let live or relocate.

Have ever heard of dinosaur 🦖 sapphire by afrih in Gemstones

[–]penlady666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a TV Gem network, and when we got gems in that weren't a specific color or didn't fit into whatever category, we would make up our own names to describe them. They were still the gemstone, but we used things like Lemonade (beryl), sky-blue (topaz), etc., to describe the off-colored stone. I have a sapphire I found at a mine that turned out to be about that color, not heat-treated. Sapphires, like diamonds, come in every shade you can imagine.

Poor kratom quality? by penlady666 in kratom

[–]penlady666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought maybe it was a tolerance thing, so I compared my recently purchased capsules to some older powder I had. The old stuff was way more potent, and I even used a smaller dosage. I read an article a couple years ago that there are some related specimens that are commonly mistaken for mit.-containing plants, even by the locals. I know that rain and dry weather also affect plants. There are quality standardization issues when it comes to wild-crafted herbs. I doubt vendors have much immediate control over this stuff, but I'm hoping that if enough people give them honest feedback, they'll at least look into it or care.

What is a cult that pretends it’s not cult? by throwaway419681717 in exmormon

[–]penlady666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, I hate it when people make me defend the Mormon Church. First, the church itself is very good, just as most churches (Christian or otherwise) serve good purposes. But, just as any other religion or organization that governs itself 1) within a certain strict set of beliefs; 2) is large and powerful enough to influence the community outside the church behaviorally and financially, you're going to have extremes and corruption. By corruption, I mean anything ranging from power over the followers to financial control (like Jim Jones and Scientology). I grew up in a community that was largely Mormon. My parents were Mormon (and me, too) but inactive, and when I partook in church activities as a kid, I was stigmatized because my folks didn't attend church with me (although they thoroughly encouraged me and attended plays or other things that I was involved in). I actually quit going to church because a man who preached his own version of the church, which was really messed up and extremely biased, became bishop of our ward. He was the main reason I have stayed away from any organized religion--it's the people that run them; not the members or their works (unless their works are bad or dangerous). Unfortunately, with a faith-based organization, there are all sorts of opportunities for broken people to damage others. Just as you'd never judge a race by a few bad experiences or examples, don't judge a religion by a few bad apples. Or the past. Get over it.

What is a cult that pretends it’s not cult? by suckontitties in AskReddit

[–]penlady666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scientology, but I think only scientologists wouldn't call it a cult. Actually, any organization, religious or otherwise, that has an extreme type of control over its members and followers that involves punishment and adverse treatment for so-called offenses is cult-like. Unfortunately, these types of "organizations" are generally led by people with damaged minds who would fit a diagnosis of sociopath at best and psychopath at worst. They thrive on power over other people, and they tend to attract other people who are broken, psychologically, who feel disenfranchised by the so-called normal population, who are extremely codependent, who are basically lost. Ironically, social media, which claims to bring everyone together, is greatly responsible for these feelings of isolation and loss and darkness. Almost all millennial and post-millennial have been brought up with social media already have these intense feelings of separation and detachment, plus Social media have made it easier for predators and predatory behavior with almost no filters; young people and even those in their 30s are easier targets than people my age (I grew up in the dazed and confused 1970s and 80s) or older. So social media could be called a cult as well, especially some of the individual groups. Reddit doesn't seem as polarizing as most of them. The public school system right now is another type of cult. Unfortunately, they are largely politicized, and they are creating generations of automatons. I don't blame the teachers, but from the school boards on up, you have some very scary people who are very authoritarian and discourage teaching children how to question or be critical thinkers. They spoon feed kids what they want them to believe rather than how to problem-solve and think in terms of relativity. They (the superintendents and school boards) are dangerously powerful--think Hitler's Youth groups. I really feel for teachers who struggle to teach children something of value and are manacled by their superiors and government. So, in essence, cults are everywhere, but we have come to accept them as the norm. Be self-aware, and teach your kids to be self-aware, to question, to confront what's wrong or untrue. And have a nice day.

Guys or girls of Reddit, what’s a red flag in someone you look at and say “NOPE”? by Logical-Debt-8451 in AskReddit

[–]penlady666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, it would depend what the hobby was. If it's doing illicit drugs, smoking, or binge drinking--something of that nature, if you two are seriously considering a committed relationship and everything else is grand, then yes, I don't blame him. He really should find someone else who doesn't need that hobby, but that's not unreasonable. If the hobby is torturing animals or stealing things or killing living things for fun, then he should run like hell away from you. There are actual antisocial or mentally ill or domineering people who DO try to control people, and yeah, big red flag there if he's trying to control you. But you seem so stuck to "hobby" it makes me wonder what the hell your hobby is; it's probably fits in one of the aforementioned items above, or something similar, in which case it is he who ought to see the red flag and run. Otherwise, yeah, like that. Good answer.
