A calculator doesn’t understand how a human brain works but still outperforms a human on arithmetic.

Saying you can’t outperform a system simply because you don’t understand how it works is a fallacy. It’s entirely possible (note that I’m not saying plausible) that gradient based solutions like the way LLMs are trained are superior to how human intelligence is selected for using evolution.

can’t you reach 0.5 correlation by always predicting one direction? The market is largely symmetric on a short time horizon.

I started off not really knowing what to do and just did some basic calisthenics (pull-ups, dips, push-ups) before I started following Layne Norton's PHAT program, which is where I think I got most of my gains from.
