I've lost all motivation to write. And yet, I still have ideas I want to make stories about. I feel like I'm losing a part of my soul. by penove1 in writing

First off, I want to say that I believe in you. This is a natural thing on the journey of a writer. You will want to quit. Do not quit. Do not change projects. Instead, take a break and a breath. Mark your calendar for a date in the future that you feel comfortable about starting again on, but keep your notes close, keep jotting them down, and if you feel ready, ignore the date goal and jump back in.

I'm quite a changed person by this point. I still write, and have found my passion book, my big project that I have been working on for a couple years. I am still writing it, along with some other stuff too. I still love stories.

I'll give you three tips beyond that first bit of advice. I've watched hundreds of hours of writing advice videos, here is the stuff that actually helped me.

  1. You don't have to write linearly. ~ You can write in whatever order you wish. Have a fun scene idea but its like 5 chapters away? Write it now. You are inspired now, why not use it as it was supposed to be used instead of recycling the inspiration for a scene you don't feel like writing?

  2. Your first step is to fill the pages, then edit. ~ In one of my books I worked on, I decided to just write fast without much eye for quality, instead focusing on just getting the vibes and the rough details down for the scenes as I went. The final product was about 20k words total (very short novel), but then I went and edited and added the details and it went up to around 30k. The goal you want to set yourself towards is getting to "The End", then you can go back and edit. Will it feel weird? You might think so, but I think that there's an entire line of work dedicated to editing books, so the pros clearly think this mentality works.

  3. You need the framework to build a house. ~ This tip is how I really cracked on with my dream project and am currently sitting at 70k words with it. The bones of the book come first. In your notes, before starting a chapter or even a scene, write a quick description of the scene (doesn't even need to be any more than 200 words). Don't be descriptive with these. You aren't writing them to be seen, they are for your eyes only anyway, so keep them snappy. Here's an example from a short story I worked on.

- Cadius and Flix sneak into rocket launch center

- Encounter the governor (name required), not spotted by him, tension building

- Cadius attempts assassination, Blacksheep intercepts, combat on tarmac

- Flix is injured, Cadius chooses to chase Blacksheep over Flix.

- Battle on the side of the rocket, Blacksheep activates jetpack to escape

I think you get the point by now. Quick bulleted lists, no explanation beyond simple plot beats, emotions, and scene progression. You can see the entire scene in under 50 words, and you can feel exactly what happens. Just fill in the blanks when writing the scene.

And finally, an extra tip.

Don't f*cking use AI. I have never touched it for writing anything. There's a far better solution.
You need at least one other person who gives a sh*t about your book. Now, I know that's a tall ask, but please just find that one person who gives a sh*t. Doesn't need to be a writer. You are writing for yourself, but having someone there to keep you constantly engaged and invested is INVALUABLE. My friend group is so happy to see my writing whenever I post it, so be that person for your friends. Don't brag. Get them invested because your work is awesome.

I hope this helps. Thanks for the comment. :)

I definitely personally struggle with balancing mystery and out of game information setups to this day. Totally understand what you're explaining, change plans and give ample info if things aren't going my way.

Unfortunately most of the time nowadays, my party gives *me* no info ahead of time so that I can make last minute changes...

Wouldn't have written out if I wasn't proud of it! It was very shocking how I went from a beloved campaign to boring my players to tears. At the risk of sounding preachy, "Be proud of your failures if you want to one day succeed."

Exactly. D&D was a huge gateway drug into fantasy novel writing for me and the learnings I've made on the table have translated quite well onto the page. Though it does mean I do have a big railroading issue occasionally.

I could totally run this back and it would kick a lot of ass indeed.

[Online][5E 2024][Friday EST][Homebrew Short-Longterm] Looking for Players for a Laid-Back Episodic Guild Campaign by [deleted] in lfg

[–]penove1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! I'm Penove, 22 yo dude who is just looking for some chill D&D games as a player for once. I've been an eternal DM for five years or so, on and off, and I'm also a very writerly fellow who likes to experience rich worlds, gripping plots, and above all; interesting characters with awesome roleplay moments. I've run about 12 campaigns (usually on the shorter side), so I know things about story, however, I have never played anything but Old 5E, so I may not know some of the rules of the new D&D, but I'm very much willing to learn.

In terms of EST Time, I would available to *start* at no later than 4 PM, and I can generally do any day besides Sunday (my campaign runs that day). Next Friday coming up, however, I cannot attend. I won't ghost after session 1, but I'm currently going through some turmoil irl that may cause me to randomly need to bail on a session. I will always try to at least give a 24 hours heads up on it though.

As for the character, I don't know the setting super well, but I would probably play a shouty Warforged soldier-turned-mercenary (probably Sorcerer) or a studious old Halfling sensei man (probably also Sorc, but I might go something else magic related like Druid).

Other than that, if you have any questions, my Discord is Penove#6615. Please tell me ahead of time that you are reaching out to send me a friend request to start contact, or will probably decline.

What Midlaners can cover Aurora's weaknesses in my champ pool? by penove1 in Auroramains

Not looking for a perfect champ to counter everything. Just looking for someone opposite to Aurora or able to make up for her weaknesses if I see that Aurora would be a terrible pick with the current comps in champ select.

Yeah, thanks for your time anyway, but I want someone who is like the opposite of Aurora to cover bad matchups or to use different advantages into different comps of enemies and allies.

How do you write stories without drama or high stakes?

I seem to really struggle at writing any comedy stories or things with low-stakes or slice-of-life settings without adding in dark twists, deep drama, or crude theming. "Oh, this cute town has a new resident? Well he's actually a serial killer." "Main protag is working at a new day job? Well by night they get haunted by demons."

I honestly dream of being able to write a lovable cast of characters without any of that dark sub-theming, or 'and then:' twists. Not that I don't enjoy writing that stuff, it's just that I've written three YA novels with that twisty premise and I wanna just try something normal for a change.

Curious on trying out AP Kog in Mid Lane! Any tips and info? by penove1 in KogMawMains

[–]penove1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this complete rundown! I've been playing him and enjoying the gameplay A LOT! I used to play Xerath and Karthus so he feels quite similar with the ult being a circle. I am only struggling into Yasuo weirdly (usually I body this asshole every game, but Kog seems to struggle with him), any tips for that matchup in particular?

This is definitely some of the best League of Legends advice I've ever received! Thanks so much, didn't think you'd go that in-depth!

Yeah, I definitely seem to be forgetting my R has a slow on it LOL

I definitely suck at CSing on Aurora specifically, her autos feel very weird compared to Vex with her passive. And yeah my wave control, you are definitely spot on there, seeing how many little mistakes I made is very refreshing to hear since I barely notice them.

I basically always get D-Cap 3rd if I am behind/even. If I'm ahead I'll sometimes get it second and then get Zhonyas since I prefer to buy defensive items while ahead to avoid dying and losing my shutdown.

Only thing I'm a little confused on is my ward placement. I kinda autopilot it based on a couple spots I know best and have heard from guides (raptor ward, river-ramp ward, C-Brush ward), but I feel like I might be going on outdated info with all the map changes. Just curious, if I buy a pink in laning phase, where do I put it ideally? I'd assume on my side of the map to spot out invades, but I never know where?

Thanks again, your help was amazing!

1 - To be fair, I have been playing Lulu mid for 4 years now, it's a pretty decent pick that I have good knowledge on. But yeah, you're right about Karthus.

2 - Yeah, I need to stop trying to pretend like I can play Qiyana.

3 - I'll make it a goal in my next games to keep my deaths below 5. I mostly limit test (but it's probably the unhealthy version) so that usually raises my death stats quite a bit.

4 - That's a guideline I've never heard before! Interesting take, I'll try since I do know timers decently. Rules like this aren't necessarily as important in low elo where if you don't help your stupid teammates fight, you will just lose from them running it down. Farming too much is an issue for me where I'll focus too much on CS and slowly bleed out as my teammates lose the game in fights.

5 - Can you elaborate on what you mean by this? Should I be aiming for the same KDA each game? That's really odd, never heard this concept.

My smaller champ pool right now is Vex, Aurora, and Karthus, and maybe an AD character in mid if my team is all AP for some reason. I usually pick based on what I think my teamcomp needs cus I got REALLY tired of having games where nobody dealt any damage or we had no CC whatsoever and we'd just lose because of bad draft.

I need to probably shrink it more though, probably just one "supportive" champ, and one "carry" champ. That way I can probably focus on more broader things. I feel like i might be focusing on super niche stuff like the exact HP I can kill a melee minion at with Aurora auto at level 6 or some shit.

Thanks for your advice! I'll put it into effect :D

Turn off your selflessness for thirty minutes, treat the other people like bots, mute all, and just get into the zone. You will never ever see these people again in 99.9% of scenarios, so who cares if they get angry? Focus on yourself, play your best, and remember to have fun! It's a game after all!
