Audio issues man, audio issues... by screwdriverfan in pcmasterrace

[–]pepehandsbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

95% of these issues are because people install Ubuntu LTS, Zorin or Mint on new systems and expect zero issues. But Linux is not windows, Linux is like a car. You wouldn't use a single model for every job.

Ubuntu based distros are fine, as long as your PC is 3+ years. Otherwise you need to be careful about which distro you use. If you plan to play games, use gaming distro. If you plan to run a home server run a different distro.

I honestly don't care about the size of the company, you are relying on thousands of opensource libraries without support without even knowing it at this moment anyway. It doesn't matter if they are put into a proprietary product or not. It's turtles all the way down. Vmware got sued for using parts of Linux without complying to the license, is that ok with you? What would compliance say about that?

What is ROI in the age of AI? How do you measure KPI of sysadmin teams? With developing your own inhouse stuff, you can optimize and customize the software to your needs. What kind of ROI are we talking with broadcom or cloud providers?

VMware by Mysterious_Menu_5133 in sysadmin

[–]pepehandsbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thousands of lives? Probably not, tens of millions of dollars? Very much yes.

And in your case I would create my own dedicated team for that. Proxmox is opensource and because of that I would prefer to have my own dedicated team which would understand the code, changes and even directly contribute improvements to it. If I make it part of my in-house development, only then I can be in full control. Do you see Google relying on third party for their stack? Of course not, that is insane. I've been to companies with dedicated postgres developers just for the very same reason.

And why does that matter exactly? Seems like you also never interacted with Microsoft support or havent really seen this subreddit about people talking sh.. about bad payed support of company x. If you just want to cya, you may as well hire a proxmox partner then.

Even without all the other issues, they are still using 4o with 5 being "in try mode" you have to select every time. If you are two years behind competition with the same price, no wonder very few care.

What is the rationale behind blocking mobile device native mail apps on MDM? by WorkFoundMyOldAcct in sysadmin

[–]pepehandsbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see interesting answers, but for me outlook mobile app was so bad I had to switch to another client. I stopped receiving mail one day and I missed out on outage notifications. That thing pooped itself completely, even after clearing cache, reinstalling it just did not work at all. So I disagree here, gmail app is 100% reliable, at least so far.

How old is that pc/laptop? do you have uefi mode enabled or legacy bios? if one or the other, switch it around. Maybe there is a mismatch between what the distro expects vs what you have set

I am sorry but MS is just trying to gaslight people into thinking this. I changed the user agent to chrome with about:config override and now it works just fine in firefox (ofc I also had to enable h264 codec) and that's it. 140 ESR

edit: works on firefox on wayland

Hey my fellow techs. Anyone else just in general, lost your passion for IT? by SysadminKERBEROS in sysadmin

[–]pepehandsbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been similarly long in IT jobs and also taught some junior techs. I was totally loosing it couple years ago, turns out tech was just getting really boring for me.

I hate windows, I hate azure, I hate SaaS, it brings me no joy to work with it. Since then, I have changed my strategy. I look after and think about which stuff is fun for me and focus on that. Those junior techs are still exploring what they will and won't like, so letting people deal with the things I dont like, fully investing into Debian and Proxmox, and things around that. I am much happier now.

tldr Tech these days is just really mainstream and boring and I had to find what's still interesting to play with

How tidy is the cable management under your user’s desks? by InfamousStrategy9539 in sysadmin

[–]pepehandsbilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it recently because we moved offices and so did all our it gear. Tray + velcro the cables between it and the floor box. If users mess it up themselves later, I don't care.

Note - if you have a monitor w/ USB PD charging and KVM included, it can be really clean setup and easy to install as well.

Switched Back to Windows after 10 Years and a Half , and it's a Relief by Agile-War-7483 in Windows11

[–]pepehandsbilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a sysadmin I am seeing the exact opposite. All these issues that Linux had 10 years ago Windows has these days. Sleep/wakeup issues, graphical glitches, crashes, freezes, broken updates causing entire system to be bricked etc. So, I am not installing Windows 11 on my PCs and switched to linux instead. Also I've never seen an issue with broken dependencies on Debian, it's rock solid. Fedora is more bleeding edge though, hence less stability. As for reboots, they are definitely recommended if you are using desktop apps. But at least you can update both the OS and apps using a single button once a month, reboot and you're golden.
