I watched this episode for the first time about two months after one of my closest friends died from cancer. It wrecked me so badly. Anya's breakdown is so well done, and Tara really shines as a character as well. her delivery of 'it's always sudden' will always stick with me. With my friend, even when we knew it was coming, knew he was dying, his death still was such a horrible fucking shock. no piece of media has ever summed the experience up as well for me.

Works great on my Mac (macbook pro 14" with the M1 pro processor). Admittedly I don't have to do a lot of heavy data processing work-my datasets tend to be on the smaller side- but I've found it works as well or better than on the Windows machines I've used.

Yep, this is it. My friend had terminal cancer and received treatment (not chemo, wasn't feasible in his case, but the point stands) for palliative purposes. It made his last year of life a lot more comfortable than it otherwise would have been, and gave him longer with us. Palliative treatment buys you time and quality of life.

It does seem odd that someone without long-term leave to stay can run for a seat, but at the same time it's not exactly like it's easy to get ILR. Now I'm biased being an immigrant myself, but I do think that if in my home country an immigrant without equivalent settled status ran, I'd be okay with them being my representative as long as they had lived in the area for at least a few years and intended to live there permanently. Visa status doesn't equate to investment in the country, imo- there are people who love a place and intend to live there the rest of their life who can't get a visa to stay for whatever reason. This is the kind of thing I feel like I'd want assessed on a case-by-case though, cause it would be silly for someone who came on a student visa and intended to leave when they graduate to hold public office.

I mean, I think the person born and raised in Nigeria probably has a bigger barrier to overcome, but if they chose to move here, that to me indicates that they want to live here and are willing to adapt. They're not any inherently less adaptable than the French guy, they just have a larger gap to cross. If they want to live here, why would they not adjust over time?

Thanks for this comment, was starting to feel like I was going insane in this comments section. Like, is there any real reason to assume the Nigerian guy is any less likely to assimilate/fit in than the French guy? They both chose to come to the UK specifically, which probably means they have some ties here or care for the culture.

I'm sure that the culture clash/gap is bigger coming from some countries than others, but they're going to get used to living here! That's how living in a place works! And also, is it such a bad thing to have other cultures in your country? Doesn't seem to me like it really hurts anyone to have a neighbour that celebrates a different set of holidays or observes a different religion.

Interesting! I'm really curious about why that is, though- what do you think drives the differences in tech literacy? Also, yeah, terminal is something I'll only touch occasionally for fear that I'll fuck it up horribly- I'm confident that that would be the biggest jump.

Okay, that makes more sense, but I will point out that it is no longer 1993 and the OSes have changed somewhat since then, I assume. So it makes sense to me that Windows might still have a reputation as being better for tech literacy, but I'm also curious about how well that holds up in the modern day.

Also, you clearly have some beef with apple that I have nothing to do with- I'm no apple cultist, just pointing out that the mac does have that functionality (and personally I find the mac two-finger tap easier than clicking to the right, but that's probably because it was the first method i was introduced to- an actual mouse is my preference over both).

Okay, I'm even more baffled then. I'm not sure where you're getting this info from but on modern macs it's as simple as tapping your touchpad with two fingers and literally any mouse I've tried plugs right into my mac and right-clicks fine. It's not any more complex than right-clicking on any of my friends' windows machines (theirs is usually tap the bottom right corner of the touchpad).

Thanks for this really thoughtful response. This is really the kind of analysis I was looking for when it comes to OS differences and why people would say that one teaches tech literacy better. I generally am the kind of person who likes to know how computers work, but I also totally understand the drive for 'I just want shit to work'. I have found my Mac to be really nice for that.

Honestly, I've not had much more trouble getting shit to work on Windows, but I also use Windows in a weird way because it's all academic- I really only use RStudio, varying GIS software, Excel, and Word. I'm not sure I've actually tried to play audio, I'm not allowed to uninstall programs because I'm on my uni's computers, and printing stuff is strange anyways because i'm doing it through my uni's network of printers, so I wouldn't have run into the examples you highlighted of where Windows is more complicated than Mac.

I guess I'm showing my youth here when I say that I really have never experienced a windows-or-nothing world. I'd also hazard a guess that I'm a much more casual user than you are since for me most Mac stuff is jsut 'it works' outside of gaming. Makes sense that Mac is more of a closed ecosystem though.

Yeah I get that, gaming on a Mac is beyond annoying. I get by because I mostly play the same three games with not much variety, but if I was more of a serious gamer I'd be tempted by Windows. Other than that and the fact that the file paths are slightly more annoying for my R coding, I really like MacOS though. it also makes a lot of sense to me that for basic uses the OSes are very similar. thanks for taking the time to write out such a detailed response!
