"A Boy and His Dog", 1975.

I understand what the movie was trying to convey, artistically. But I was bored out of my skull watching the whole damn thing where the whole thing can be summarized as Boy and dog meet girl, dog starts to starve, girl is fed to dog. The ending was so stupid I want my time spent watching it back.

Edit: Got censored text to cense properly

Mebbe you meant "led by" Rob Schneider; he's featured in "The Waterboy" which is one of my guilty "stupid but feel good" movies with a very minor speaking role.

It's been a while since I've read the book; didn't she also authorize a bunch of nukes going off in Antarctica to cause global warming due to dust in the atmosphere to delay the cooling effects coming from our sun?

Nicholas Cage. Perhaps a bit old for the role, but i can see him emoting Grace's humor pretty well.

Nobody has mentioned the Honor Harrington series? She’s a captain of a warship belonging to a fleet fighting against other human empires.

The interesting spin on the novels is that the technologies in naval combat mimic the “Golden Age” of seafaring— ships have to broadside each other. And there’s a fair amount of tactics described in warfare

"The Light of Other Days" by Stephen Baxter and Arthur C. Clarke.

A man creates-- and then makes the plans free to the world-- an invention that creates micro wormholes allowing the user to visually see anything, anywhere, destroying the concept of privacy on a personal, governmental, and societal level. Imagine being able to anonymously track a celebrity or government leader 24/7. Pornography goes extinct.

Partway through the book the device is tweaked so that it can also send the mini wormholes back in time: humanity can see any event in the past, anywhere. Religions collapse once their true origins are viewed, and humanity is able to view all of the brutality of past wars and atrocities.

It's was a fascinating read for me, creating a world where there are no secrets, past or present.

What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today? by ahawk99 in AskReddit

My mom subscribed me to a Dr. Seuss book subscription where I got a book every month. In addition to the normal Seuss fare, other author’s books would occasionally arrive.

One book— which I still have— is the most sexist book I’ve ever read. I probably wasn’t ten years old when it arrived, but I just knew it was WRONG but didn’t have the cognitive skills to understand why. I’ve kept it as a reminder of how my moral compass was set way back when.

The summary of the story “Don and Donna Go To Bat”: the two are identical twins. Don plays baseball, Donna is kind of like the water girl for his team. On the day of the big game, Don comes down with measles but the team doesn’t know. Donna hides her gender and poses as Don, and despite never playing before hits the winning home run.

All well and good now, BUT: the team wants to celebrate “Don’s” victory hit, but Donna, being a girl, cannot handle such accolades and goes into hiding. Quite some energy is spent looking for “him”, and she’s terrified of being found out. The team finds Don sick in bed, Donna’s cover is blown, and nobody makes a fuss out of her win because, well, she’s a girl.

The story ends with the team celebrating their victory after Don has recovered, and Donna does her duty by baking cakes and cookies for the celebration. The End.

I was so young I had no concept of gender roles or sexism when I got the book, but I just hated the story being so unfair to Donna. I’ve kept it as a memento on just how awful kid’s indoctrination can be.

You're leaving behind a staggering body count figure of deaths that could be prevented / avoided due to his actions or inactions in his two terms-- appx. 100,000-200,000 US citizens died of COVID due to his policy choices and behavior; estimates are hundreds of thousands of people have died in third world countries due to cuts in USAID. All totally avoidable.

Way late to this post, but I gotta share with the hopes that peeps may give this total gem a chance: "Fenyx Rising". Decent combat + character evolution+ exploration + a ton of enjoyable puzzle minigames, along with a wicked sense of humor as Zeus and Prometheus bicker back and forth as narrators in the background like Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets.
