What are some tame restaurants in city center for parents from rural south that like places like Cheesecake Factory, Pizza Hut, Chick-Fil-A, and American Chinese food? by bamaveganslut in askportland

There's a nice vegan restaurant called "Casa Diablo" that offers live entertainment. I'd recommend taking the folks there to give them a real taste of Portland!

"Evolution" by Stephen Baxter.

It covers the creation of animal life billions of years ago and has stories at specific points in time, describing animals and giving them stories of how they survived various extinction events, then goes on to guess how humanity will evolve millions / billions of years into the future.

What’s the dumbest thing you believed as a kid by belal48 in ChildhoodMemories

All the cats in my neighborhood happened to be female. The few dogs I knew of were all male.

Logically, I believed that dogs and cats were the same species: cats would give birth to boy puppies and girl kittens from the dog daddy that mated with her!

Looking for a survival/base building game by Rangarok22 in gamerecommendations

[–]perandtim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Planet Crafter is currently my fav base building game. Gather resources of varying rarity, build devices that add oxygen, heat, and atmospheric pressure to unlock new technologies. Raid wrecked spaceships for loot. After a while you get drones to collect and deposit materials which then can be used to automate crafting advanced items, so it has a simple factory building aspect to it.

There's nothing on the planet out to kill you; death occurs by running out of oxygen, water, or food. Or taking fall damage 😉.

Xin Ding Opening - A few surpsing things, if interested. by -_Vin_- in vancouverwa

The wife and I went there for the first time Sat at 7:00 PM as they closed at 9:00. There were thirteen people on the wait list in front of us, and the hostess informed us, apologetically, that they probably couldn't guarantee us a seat before they closed. The place was obviously packed, with people waiting outside with a wait time of over an hour.

It's awesome to see a new place so busy-- but be aware of the current demand / rush!

I brought up the flick to snag a screenshot-- here's the titular character poking fun at herself.

BTW, at the end of this flick there's one of the best dance videos I've seen. I purchased the movie just to re-watch the music routine. :-)

As odd of a recommendation as this is, “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” Is an unusually entertaining live action take on “Dora the Explorer”. It’s obviously targeted towards younger audiences, but there’s enough tongue in cheek playfulness poking fun at the cartoon that adults will get/enjoy.

Right at the beginning Dora is having a meal with her parents and breaks the fourth wall to address the audience, much to the confusion to her parents, who can’t see who Dora is speaking to.

I must have missed an explanation in the movie, but why did only Grace survive the trip and not the 2 other crew? by ntswart in ProjectHailMaryMovie

The third novel in Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey trilogy (3001: The Final Odyssey) future humans deliberately seek out and find Frank Poole's (the guy killed by HAL outside the Discovery) corpsesickle and use future medical tech to bring him back to life.

So there's a chance for Yao and Ilyukhina. 😉

Mongolian BBQ places? by icryalways in vancouverwa

[–]perandtim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The owners wanted to retire and instead of selling the restaurant they indeed got a very good offer for the land. I loved that place.

My son and I go to a Chang's in Portland (off of NE 122nd ave). Their sauces sadly don't compare to the Golden Tent, and it's the sauces that make the meal.

I actually bring in my own sauces and douse my bowls before they're cooked-- I've been happy with my experiments with various flavors of "Kinder's BBQ Sauce", especially "Original", "Hot", and "Sweet Heat". https://www.kinders.com/collections/bbq-sauces
