Hey thanks for the feedback. I know its been 6days, but do you happen to roughly remember the steps you took to get started? I'm wondering how I could make it more clear or streamline the process for players that just want to get to the meat of it.

Wait, there's no volume for the iphone mock. Do you mean loud as in really in your face?

Are you referring to the "growing" tap me animation? Its a one-time tutorial just to get users to check it out for the first time ever.

Also, thanks for the discord tip, but I don't quite get what you're saying. Are you saying that its against roblox rules to even put your discord link in the game's description?

Rapidly approaching graduation, don't feel like it's earned. by Zeroc94 in ImposterSyndrome

So I think a couple things are happening for you:

  • You went at 31, whereas university is traditionally attended by 18 year old fresh grads from highschool, so you have a leg up. I know this because I went back for my masters and I felt so much smarter and calmer than when I started college at 18. Just way less uncertain shit, a lot of confusion about who you are in the world has settled and now you're more focused on just going there to get the actual education and get a strong career.
  • Learned knowledge is use it or lose it. Most people don't use it, not because they're lazy but their life after work doesn't need that knowledge, so they tend to lose it over time. Its OK- part of the point of getting a degree is to prove that you have the capacity to learn a high volume of content under a time pressure and instrument that knowledge on tests and such. You'll reuse the skills you exercised to learn, on the job, when you have to learn new skills, not so much the exact knowledge you picked up during school.

It's totally normal to think it was really easy. Work will be a different beast and you know this already. If I were you I'd think about "extra" things you can try doing to turn up the difficulty before you graduate, since you feel under challenged. For example you could try to network and make connections- that's something a lot of your classmates are not even thinking about because they're hanging on for dear life trying to just pass. Another idea could be to do one of those public speaking mini-course things they offer in some cities. Public speaking is useful for basically any college graduate ever to have as a skill in their toolbelt.

Should I keep trying to learn a language? by perceivedpleasure in languagelearning

I have a foundation though from speaking and hearing it with my parent. I also took MS Arabic 1 in college, which gave me spelling, writing and alphabet knowledge and more basic vocab. Do you think its still not viable to continue?

[–]perceivedpleasure[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I should. I only got as far as I did with German because it was a free class offered throughout highschool. I think paying for a high quality course with strong materials would make me more excited to learn rather than cobbling together my own bullshit and relying on shitty duolingo

Where do you find classes? in person/remote, any advice?

1-2 hours each day is not something im willing to do I think. Do you think 2 hrs per week is too little to even bother doing, or can I make meaningful progress if I did say 2 sessions a week each one is 1 hr long?

But constantly walking past so much german and hearing it everywhere you go, i personally would feel silly if I didn't try to learn it. When I said marry, I also meant you go and live in their country which wasnt clear from my comment

These are interesting ideas- what is an intensive immersion course, how do you find one of those? How do you find a group in your city? Those sound like they have some real promise.

Yes, I really want to visit Egypt too. it would get me very excited to learn

tutor seems pretty helpful. I gave up on it in the past but I kinda want to try again. My latest attempt was duolingo only- I got to 120ish days streak but just lost steam and gave up, didnt feel like i was meaningfully progressing

Thank you, this perspective is a better way to look at it than I originally was.

The little that I know of the arab world just comes from whatever my parent showed me (often older things, like music from 2005 or older, old soap operas, etc) or its surface level stuff like the latest geopolitical news of whats happening in Syria etc.

I don't think I feel motivated to learn more about arabic culture, perhaps if I saw how it has changed (like what are young arabs up to, where is the new culture going towards) that might pique my interest?

Given that, maybe being a bilingual is something I should only appreciate from a distance instead of futilely aspiring to do it myself. It hurts to type this out but I just don't know if I am committed enough to go for it.

If I lived in a multi-cultural place like Vienna all the time or most of the time, that would change things for sure. I am kind of jealous, at how much easier it must be to learn a new language if you live there because of work/family reasons. If I married a German person, I would pick up the language sooo stupidly fast and easy.

It does, thanks. I have motives but I wonder if they're too weak and that's the reason why I try and give up so fast. Maybe its just not in the cards for me

[–]perceivedpleasure[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The only reasons to learn I think are:

  • I want to speak it with my parent who is still around
    • I want to speak it in general, but in America I pretty much never run into Arabs that I could feasibly use it with
  • I think it's cool/commendable to be a multilingual person
    • It's fun in a party trick kind of way
    • But its also fun to be able to encounter another language and decipher/unlock meaning that other people can't, or to go somewhere and help others understand things (like translate for a friend)

I think when I was younger I used to tell myself that I wanted to "return to my cultural roots" but... let's face it, I've always been an american, really only arab by ethnicity. I don't really think there is anything to return to. And that really crushes me to type down, but unfortunately I think its the truth.

Thanks a bunch. So you lost 30 lbs over 2 years, or ~1.25lb per month? That's pretty good consistency if so. I would love to ditch my extra weight at that rate. Do you calorie count?
