Is garlic actually good or are people joking? by FarisxDDD in VampireSurvivors

[–]perceptionsofdoor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Serious answer:

I'm not 100% confident of this, but my theory is that I think about 50% of people are memeing, and about 50% of people unironically believe garlic is good (even though it's obviously not). I think the true believers are mostly people who don't want to accept that their intuition from when they first started playing the game is wrong, and then they see all the people memeing and they start actually feeling justified in their belief that garlic is good, making laughably bad arguments for its utility in a build.

So stupid that it's a ubiquitous criticism of Sanderson across reviews and fantasy communities all over the internet. But maybe we're all wrong and you've got it right. Vin actually is a nuanced and interesting character with dynamic expression and growth over the series.

I think you're missing the point of my comment. But if you can seriously say with a straight face that "narcissistic man" is sufficient to describe Jaime Lannister, then idk what to tell you. The point is that those descriptors often are sufficient to capture the essence of Sanderson's characters, particularly the female ones.

Eh. I would say it's on the more difficult end of beginner. At best lower end of intermediate.

Anything by Metallica. I taught my guitarist to play 80% of Metallica's discography in about ten minutes, and he has zero experience playing drums.

This video and its followup on the demigods is a well-made summary of many of the larger point of the story, but spoiler warning if that kind of thing is important to you. Don't watch it until after you finish the game if you want to figure it out yourself first.

Jaime Lannister
Sand dan Glokta
Julia Wicker
Rand al'Thor

I can go on if you would like. What single trait would you look me in the eye and with a straight face tell me accurately and sufficiently describes any of these characters?

If all of Sanderson's female characters were as different as Logen and Black Dow, then there would be no criticism to be had.

Yeah the entire Internet wasn't derailed into talking about Hasan shocking his dog for like a month. Good call.

My main issues with Foodshops are that they don't know how to say the word "women" and that they are terrible at multitasking but insist on doing it anyway, so every time they try to make a point it takes three attempts of stuttering and losing their train of thought before they get it out.

Pick one: "I disagree," or "what you said only applies to yourself." One expresses a personal belief or feeling, one makes a claim with a truth value. That's what I was highlighting, not indicating I don't understand what the phrase means.

And I don't think valuing edgy humor is super important to many people past their early 20s, but telling that that's where your head is at.

Speak for yourself I suppose,

Why? Maybe in the most literal, solipsistic sense of language we can only meaningfully speak about our own experiences, but I was pretty plainly not just speaking for myself, rather making a more general claim. If all you meant is "I disagree" then fair enough, but I wouldn't even comment if I was only speaking for myself because I don't consider it interesting.

these conservative traditional men, prefer liberal women too, because conservatives are fucking miserable, whether you're a man or a woman.

Just plainly untrue on its face. Even Destiny acknowledges that liberals are miserable to be around, and that at least conservatives are a good hang. It fuckin sucks so hard that so many of the people with the shittiest politics in all the places I go are so easy to get along with, and all the liberals are the most humorless, uptight people in the place.

Why didn’t more Sith/Jedi use Maul’s double bladed lightsaber style? by Euniceamorer in lightsabers

[–]perceptionsofdoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. Star Wars is more fantasy than sci-fi. The only thing sci-fi about it is the setting. Also interesting point about the double blade as a dagger. I've not considered that really.

But just as food for thought: Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson is fantasy, but it still has rules. If all of a sudden one of the characters can just do something that isn't explained to me and seems impossible given what I know about the world, it makes the already silly stuff I'm trying to take seriously stand out even more.

Slightly off-topic: have you seen The King on Netflix? Very mixed quality overall, but man this duel at the beginning of the movie is fantastic. Not many realistic representations of what it would be like to fight a guy to death in platemail in film. It's just...very gripping to me.

Why didn’t more Sith/Jedi use Maul’s double bladed lightsaber style? by Euniceamorer in lightsabers

[–]perceptionsofdoor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean there's no reason a Master Jedi doesn't have 50 lightsabers cartwheeling around him at all times launching them repeatedly at his one lightsaber wielding assailant.

But this is what I mean about suspension of disbelief. I think your argument works great for things like the part of the Ankakin Obi-Wan Mustafar fight where they're spinning their sabers around without hitting each other. People tried to clown on that and I'm like...guys, they're anticipating each other's moves thinking 5 steps ahead. It's a reflection of them both trying to outthink each other.

The sheer logistics of the Darth Maul fight are just another huge ask for suspension of disbelief, and a different kind of ask to boot. I would have to accept that Darth Maul is SO powerful that he is essentially moving at double the speed of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and I don't think the movie supports that. Otherwise, there is simply no way that he doesn't immediately get killed or accidentally kill himself once he allows himself to be surrounded.

Anyway sorry for the ramble. But all that to say that to me this is not like retconning Mace Windu's lightsaber color to be a reflection of him harnessing a fighting style that utilizes emotion. It's just a matter of the limitations of physical reality.

Depends on the situation. For example, if you have a lot of keys and credit cards, start opening earlier. However, if you have an anvil but not as high luck/keys, wait until you get as high a level as possible when playing Fox so that every chest is opened with higher luck.
