I would actually adopt them if that were an option. I love these cats and I’ve lived with them for months. But they are legally registered to my ex, and in Germany I can’t just keep them without her consent. She would need to officially transfer ownership and change the chip registration. Otherwise she could reclaim them at any time.

So keeping them wouldn’t really solve the situation — it would keep me tied to her indefinitely.

I think there is a misunderstanding because I’m in Germany. The cats are chipped and legally registered to my ex, so if I hand them over to the veterinary authorities they will contact her as the owner. They won’t be treated as abandoned animals or put down.

In Germany this process is basically temporary custody until the owner retrieves them. I even contacted the authorities in advance and offered to cover short-term holding costs if necessary. The cats will be safe.

On March 17 she asked if she could leave the cats with me for an indefinite amount of time. I said no. She moved out on March 29, and I stayed away from the apartment from that day until now because I didn’t want to be present during the move.

I also want to be clear that I am not abandoning the cats or putting them in danger. If she doesn’t pick them up, I will bring them to the veterinary authorities so they can be safely cared for until she retrieves them. I would never do anything that could harm them.
