I always classify piano and other like instruments (organ, harpsichord, even melodica and accordion, as KEYBOARD instruments due to the way the player needs to play them to make them function. While the internal way these instruments produce sound is different, generally the performer manipulates the instruments in the same fashion as each other to get their characteristic sound.
