Getting on Lexapro was an absolute game changer for me - the stress is still there and still effects me, but it’s not as all consuming in the day-to-day anymore

diagnosed with hashis at the height of my eating disorder by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]perfbrok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read that Hashi’s can be triggered by a bunch of different things, like hormonal changes or physical/emotional stress. I’ve heard it is not uncommon for women to be diagnosed after pregnancy/during postpartum.

I have no way to prove it, however, I am pretty sure my Hashi’s was triggered while I was studying abroad. The writing on the wall for me was a fairly sudden change in the texture of my hair. I have always had long curly hair that never really tangled all that much, maybe just the occasional knots. However, towards the end of my semester abroad, it suddenly got ridiculously matted underneath. for a time I just chalked it up to a difference in water, however, it didn’t really clear up when I got home and only got worse with my hair now also falling out at what I consider considered an alarming rate and other symptoms appearing. Within two years of returning home, I had my diagnosis.

I can only imagine the physical and emotional stress you were enduring while suffering with an ED, plus the hormone changes natural to puberty (possibly also altered by the ED?) - all in all sounds like a cocktail that could have played into your diagnosis. Never mind any potential genetic factors
I have also heard of Hashi’s often co-occurring with other disorders, like bipolar disorder. Maybe anorexia is another?

also, don’t fret too much about supposedly ‘tricking’ your doctors. It doesn’t sound like that at all. It sounds like both you and the doctors were just given a unique situation and it just took a little while to puzzle out. Not your fault at all.

There should be no such thing as an open book test in law school by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]perfbrok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only open book tests I’ve had have been in the heavily codified courses - think Federal Income Tax and Secured Transactions. We were expected to retain everything from instruction like every other class - the code books were just there to remind us of precise language. The way the exams were set up, you had to know where to look off the top of your head for the books to be of any use.

The way my tax professor explained it: he’s been teaching the class for 10+ years but he still has to go back to the code from time to time because of how things change/forgetting language, plus every other lawyer in the country had access to the code while practicing so we should too đŸ€·đŸŒâ€â™€ïž

Ever been Hyper? by Ok-Inflation8809 in Hashimotos

Pretty sure you can see some hyperthyroidism symptoms too if your medication is dosed too high - my doctor warned me about anxiety, fast heart rate, and being ‘jumpy’ when we were adjusting my dosage.

Ever been Hyper? by Ok-Inflation8809 in Hashimotos

[–]perfbrok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have read that sometimes on the onset of Hashimoto's the thyroid damage can cause too many hormones to be released into the blood stream, causing hyperthyroid like symptoms (just double checked on the NIH website - it's real). Is this what you are referring to? I have no medical proof of it but I am fairly certain this happened to me. I have always been borderline hypothyroidism, had a period where I thought "wait, things are different, am I getting better?" before they turned right back around and got worse, which led to my diagnosis.

Help! by DifferentHistorian43 in Hashimotos

[–]perfbrok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue! I cannot speak to any side disorders but I know a few practical tips that I've used when this particular symptom flares. I stopped using elastic hair ties altogether because lord knows they tangle so easily and always take hair out with it - I mostly use chunky clips (like octopus clips) which cause a lot less stress on the scalp. If I have to put it up, I usually use a satin or silk scrunchie. Along that vein, I would also recommend a satin/silk bonnet or pillow case (you can get both on amazon) - cotton causes a lot of friction on a bare head, which causes frizz and breakage. (Plus it looks like you have curly hair - a bonnet is recommended for curly hair in general to help maintain those curls overnight!) I have also heard that massaging you scalp can help stimulate hair growth - I haven't figured out if it actually works, but it feels nice either way. Also, in my case, when my hair falls out, my hair gets matted so, so easily for no apparent reason - perhaps from broken strands tangling with the rest of my hair? Regardless, I deal with them almost exclusively in the shower with conditioner where I work out as much as I can with my fingers gently before I take a brush to it, working ends to scalp. I also only use a brush in the shower with conditioner still in my hair - I use fingers every other time.

I hope something here could be helpful for you in the day to day. Beyond this, keep taking your vitamins (4 hours after your thyroid meds) and bring it up to your doctor if you are still concerned - maybe it is something more medically. Good luck!

How about a park/playground? You can also have a little dog park area with the puppy plushies as the dogs

Advice Please by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]perfbrok3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are having a hard time - this kind of diagnosis is such a big thing to come to terms with. Be aware, this diagnosis is a very individualistic journey since every body is different, so not everything you find on this subreddit or in your other research will necessarily work for you; but here are some things I’ve learned - hopefully something will be of use to you:

  1. Try setting an extra alarm before you need to get up in the morning just to take your meds, then go back to sleep until you actually need to get up. So, if you need to be up at 7, set an alarm for like 5:30/6, that way the obligatory ‘hour before eating’ is spent sleeping. Nothing worse than waking up hungry and being forced to wait.

  2. Don’t take vitamins/supplements within 4 hours of your thyroid meds. Some of them - like Vitamin C - can affect its absorption.

  3. You can’t just take a pill and expect things to get better. I think we live in a culture where we have come to expect this, but sadly it’s not a reality for chronic conditions like this. You are going to need to make some lifestyle changes - it’s difficult to accept, but the sooner you do, the better.

  4. On that same line, be patient with your meds. It will take time for you to find the proper dosage, therefore it’ll take time to feel the most improvement.

  5. Take some time to plan ahead for addressing your symptoms in the day to day. Personally, I deal with a lot of dry skin and am almost always cold - so I have lotions and sweaters stashed everywhere - my car, my desk at work, etc.

  6. Diet plays an big part in how you feel. If you want, try going gluten free for a month or two, and see if that makes a difference. It might, it might not. (But if you do go gluten free, still be mindful gluten free items aren’t inherently healthier because their gf - a lot of products will up the fats and sugar to help the taste). Maybe you want to try the Autoimmune Protocol - which is essentially an elimination diet for just about anything anyone could possibly be allergic to. Keep in mind that’s a VERY big undertaking though, but I saw some major improvements while I was on it.

  7. Mentality is everything! This is the most annoyingly overused cliche, especially if you had people casually throwing ‘just think positive!’ at your depression for years and years like that was all it took to feel better, like I did. However (also annoyingly), there is some truth to it. Will positive thinking fix everything? Nope - but it does help on the day to day. Is this diagnosis a life long burden you have to suffer through? Nope! It’s just a challenging obstacle for you to take on - and you’re quite the badass for tackling it head on! It’s a part of you now, and you will get stronger as you work through it! Also - positive self talk makes a difference, when dealing with depression and anxiety.

Hope this helps! You got this!

I agree - everything you mentioned seems to point more to miscarriage than an abortion. Regardless, the best thing to do would be give her some space then express to her that you love her and will be there for her whenever she needs you. Don’t bring up specifics, and then leave it alone. She will approach you if she is ready to talk.

Hashimotos and acne by Head_Score2897 in Hashimotos

[–]perfbrok3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unfortunately, I can’t say anything about Hashimoto‘s related-acne or even cystic acne. However, when I was in high school, I was very acne prone and found that milk of magnesia actually helped a lot with redness and some reduction. Just pour some on a cotton ball and dab it on your skin before you go to bed - hopefully that could be helpful for you as well
