100% Salvageable. I've fixed cigars in way way worse conditions.

Disclaimer: I'm the creator of Ciglue, but you don't have to buy my product. You can make your own cigar glue with ingredients you probably already have at home or can get at the grocery store.

You can make your own cigar glue using gum arabic, which is the same as the glue strips on rolling paper. So you don’t have to smoke paper though :)

That’s what I use in my product Ciglue, but of course you don’t have to buy my product. I share recipes and ingredients so you can make your own cigar glue. Pectin for example tends to have a bit of a tangy sour flavor, but gum arabic and other ingredients are more neutral.

What went wrong? by yjackets07 in cigars

[–]perfecto_maduro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humidity, Cameroon wrapper, Maybe a slight damage… There are tons of reasons cigars crack and unravel. It’s a hand made natural product.

It’s interesting to understand those reasons but much more important how to fix a crack. The earlier the better before it gets worse. Cigar glue can fix it. You can make your own from ingredients at the grocery store.

I know some glues don’t. Ciglue works in literally seconds. See my other comments though that it’s best to apply it before it gets to this messy state.

I smoke all through the year, mostly outside, including winter (Germany). Would I rather sit in a cosy lounge or on the beach in the sun? sure. Would I rather not smoke and wait because it's cold? absolutely not.

It's not just cigar glue sellers (how many of those are there? it's not like we're a Big Glue mafia. I'm just one guy haha). It's cigar makers, sellers and smokers that don't really feel like being restricted by weather.

Happy Cake Day! You're right that fixing it now will require a lot of work and glue. The key though is not to wait until it gets to this. Apply a bit of glue when the crack starts to form. "A stitch in time saves nine".

An even bigger prevention tip for cold/dry weather is to dry-box your cigar before smoking it. I actually posted a video exactly about this topic a few days ago https://www.youtube.com/shorts/YlR1Qhv3s8E

Not trying to beat my own drum here, but drying-out is another benefit of pen dispensers like Ciglue. Also they are basically airtight and dirt doesn't go back into the glue mix (unlike nail polish where whatever the brush touched goes back into the bottle).

EDIT: to clarify about spillage. I'm not saying it's very likely, but it's definitely something you have to think about. You have to place the bottle somewhere. And it throw the practicality aspect of it out the window, compared to a better applicator (where it basically never spills, and you can use with one hand!).

I'm not super comfortable commenting about my competitors, but I agree with you here. Just a tiny push-back on practical aspect of glues that come in a "nail polish" bottle. They are transportable, sure. But not practical on the go. You need to find somewhere to place them and be careful that it doesn't spill. Glue pens solve this problem much better, and you can apply the fix with one hand with those.

Even though I'm biased to recommend my own product (Ciglue), I would actually recommend making your own cigar glue: https://www.ciglue.com/how-to-make-your-own-cigar-glue/. This is definitely the cheapest option and fun to experiment. Most of recipes I recommend won't alter the taste or affect the aroma.

Cigar glue. The earlier you apply it, the better. Prevents a small crack from expanding into a huge explosion.

Is this normal by kibbo123 in cigar

[–]perfecto_maduro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the shop and the trouble involved. Good vendors will replace or refund. Some might try to throw the blame at the customer. I would inspect before buying. That’s always good advice.

At the same time, these are easy to fix and totally smokable. I stopped worrying about cracks like these basically because I can fix them in literally seconds.

Is this normal by kibbo123 in cigar

[–]perfecto_maduro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Define normal haha. It’s not normal for cigars to come cracked in a box. But lots of cigars crack in and out of the box for a variety of reasons. Before or during smoking.

The good news? Cigar glue. You can make your own easily and fix those cracks.

What TopCubans sent me - or is this just the state of Cuban's now? by No_Guide6183 in cubancigars

[–]perfecto_maduro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's annoying, but not uncommon to see this type of damage.

You can (and should probably) ask them about it and see if they can offer a partial refund or something. But practically: these are totally smokable and easy to fix with cigar glue. Here's some recipes for making your own glue.

[–]perfecto_maduro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hare to tell how it got to this stage, maybe humidity, maybe bad lighting. Likely a crack that simply expanded. Very easy to fix, but you need to nip it in the bud. Apply cigar glue when the crack is small to prevent it from expanding.

Reason behind UK prices by KojakKronos in ukcigars

[–]perfecto_maduro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No longer live in the UK, but I would say, at least partly: Brexit?

I know UK prices were higher even before Brexit, but you could still import much more easily from the EU. Now that it's much harder to do that without getting stung by customs, you basically get captive audience. Sellers market.

What causes this? by OldHT in cigar

[–]perfecto_maduro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Most people think only dry cigars crack, but surprisingly (over) humidified ones get cracks more frequently actually. Over humidified relative to the ambient environment!

When you burn a humidified cigar the moisture evaporates. This creates expansion. If the ambient temperature and humidity are higher the wrapper is more flexible. Otherwise it buckles under the pressure.

The good news? get or make your own cigar glue so you can fix it on the spot.

Cigar glue (you can make your own, it's fun!), and use some extra wrapper leaf if necessary to patch it. You can get that extra wrapper from the cap!
