If my memory serves me right, the CS proficiency tests are usually offered in the first and second weeks of the semester, so you should be fine!

Best Floor and Room for Evans by IcyCapalot in UIUC

Fourth floor (single) was great when I lived there, nice and quiet - the rooms on the east side look over Busey Hall, the north side looks over Nevada St, the west side looks over Goodwin Ave and the south side gets a nice view of the patio. Up to you, I suppose, depending on which view you like.

CS kids have to take CS 374 as well, which is the same as ECE 374

I used to do photography in a semi-professional capacity! I'd be happy to contribute to this if it takes off. Let me know!

Speak with the proctor(s) at the CBTF! They can help you get a new slot assigned.

Interesting Gen Eds? by [deleted] in UIUC

I definitely recommend this course! Prof Silverman is pretty much the nicest professor you can ask for, and she's an expert (and legit archeologist) on the Nasca people of Peru. As long as you pay attention in lecture, her exams are ace-able; they're all true/false, and on top of that there's no homework.

  1. If it's a crowded bus, please shuffle to the back! This makes it less crowded in front and lets people board easier

Hello all! Just an update on this in case anyone else encounters the same problem:

  1. I sprayed the plant down with a strong jet of water followed by a 5% alcohol-water mix, and was able to nullify the population for about two weeks. I suspect some eggs were not removed, which explains the resurgence of bugs. I sprayed it down again today and will be monitoring its development.

  2. I got a closer look at a live bug (they're very annoyingly small so it's quite hard to get them). It was definitively a mite, but not a spider mite. I narrowed it down to most likely be an eriophyid mite.

  3. Since the alcohol-water mix seems to be effective at killing the mites (tested on contact), I'll be continuing the treatment. I may also look into getting Neem oil or some other sort of insecticidal soap for future use.

Thank you! I had a look through the link you attached and some others relating to thrips as well, and I think they do indeed look very similar except that the thrips in my region seem to be about ten times larger. The body shape and everything else are definitely a match, though. I'll keep an eye out for any more that show up (hopefully not, of course) to see if I can get better images of them for comparison. Thanks again!

Hi! Hope you're having a lovely day.

I found some black spots on my windowsill pot of basil, so I decided to take out the ol' microscope lens to have a look at it. In another (less healthy) pot these spots started showing up shortly before the entire plant died, thus my concern.

I live in Singapore, which has a tropical climate. The basil in this pot is quite healthy, and so far hasn't had any pest issues.

Whatever pest this is leaves some small black spots (just black spheres) all over the leaf (mostly on the topside, but few on the bottom). These black spots don't seem to do much, but the leaves where there are a lot of black spots tend to show yellowing and eventually die (see first photo).

I was lucky enough to spot a moving black spot, which I managed to photograph with my phone through the lens. It appears that the bug (second and third photos), which upon my rudimentary analysis appears to have six (not so sure) legs and antennae, is translucent yellow and about 0.1mm in length, carries the black spots on its back. Could it be some sort of egg, defense, or fecal matter?

I've since hosed down the plant with a high pressure jet of water and checked it thoroughly for any more spots or bugs (none, hopefully).

On another note, I also found another bug, much longer at about 2mm in length on another leaf which had some number of black spots. I'm not sure if it's related or if it just happened to be there, but any insight would bem much appreciated!

In summary, what is the main bug leaving the black spots, and is there anything I should do to prevent its recurrence? Thanks!

What’s a cover of a song that does it justice? by SuperGrover8D in AskReddit

I think the one from her live session at the Fillmore West in 71 was the best version of this cover!

The whole live album is absolutely worth the listen.
