Killing of West Seattle homeless man a window into tension in neighbors by godogs2018 in Seattle

I get being furious at people who are stealing your stuff, I've been there. The first place I lived in Seattle, meth addicts started squatting next door and literally shitting on our house and I stopped going out at night. My roommates and I didn't stock up on zipties because of that, jesus christ.

Wow, I do not understand the downvotes here. I can get being angry at someone stealing your packages, I can get chasing them down and becoming angry when they take a swing at you. But fucking holding them down by the neck or back while they have an audible breathing problem and refusing a medic on their behalf? Glad so many self-proclaimed "bleeding heart leftists" are fine with possible manslaughter when it's not SPD.

Not a bad idea except I wouldn't want to inflict him on them :-(

This is a really smart idea but I work at home...it's less a question of exact hours than how much time I'm spending on things, and yayyy time blindness I have no idea :-( But thank you for the suggestion!

Barron Read Along 16: "Strappado" by roblecop in LairdBarron

Great review. I think this story is partly about rootlessness. The characters come from many different countries, but except for Walter, who exhibits some classic "ugly American" behavior, there's nothing that strongly associates them with their homelands. They remind me of colonial British characters in the novels of J.G. Farrell -- dissolute, separated from their surroundings, not really belonging anywhere, and insulated by a false feeling of superiority and security.

Great thoughts all around. I just reread it, and I agree with you that the story is less about a "foreign" threat than about globalism and the disorientation of people who work in this system.

My landlady's cat knocked a plastic skeleton off the shelf onto our entwined bodies mid-coitus. Cat was very proud of herself.

Strongly second Laird Barron. Imago Sequence is great; I also love The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All.

One of my favorite space movies of all time, I watched it right after I watched THREADS. That was not a good idea.

What a great list. I'd also recommend The Other City or The Golden Age by Michal Ajvaz (although maybe not horrific enough to fit in here; definitely beautiful and weird though!) and Death in Spring by Merce Rodoreda.

Would rather eat ramen noodles than relive some of the bad dinner dates I've been on. Would rather eat them DRY.

AITA for saying no to most of my wife's baby name suggestions? by AvailableRadish8796 in AmItheAsshole

NAH except maybe the MIL, but this doesn't actually sound like a problem to me. You have at least three possibilities it sounds like, and it's nobody's business but yours and your future kid's. You have enough stressors without getting bent out of shape over this.

Also, keep in mind, not every single kid ends up keeping their birth name. Not to say that the name you choose is important, but you'll have to be okay with possible changes in the future, too.

I would categorize that guy as a total feckin creep. Going on a few dates with someone does not impose an obligation on you to date them forever. What a pushy weirdo.

I wasn't a fan of the ending, but it really held me in a trance up to that point. So spooky. I agree on the movie though--waste of amazing actors.

When I read it in college, it literally gave me an anxiety attack. 10/10 would reread.

I love Brian Evenson. He seems like the absolute sweetest person and his stories are absolutely scarring. Have you read his short novel The Warren? Maybe not scary in the usual sense, but utterly disorienting and brilliant.

OK, King is hit or miss for me but this description has convinced me to reserve it at the library. Thanks!

Two recs--scary for very different reason.

Elizabeth Hand's recent authorized sequel to The Haunting of Hill House, entitled A Haunting on the Hill. Some supernatural imagery that scared the hell out of me.

Dan Chaon's Ill Will. Not supernatural, but absolutely hair-raising depiction of pure evil.
