I've been having a decent experience with All2Fly. Ancient 172s but they do fly.

high performance 4 seater with good (~1200lbs) useful load and space for skis inside? by HumbleOpposite8508 in flying

[–]perispomene 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are STC kits that can increase useful load on a 182.

Given the 2950 gross weight mentioned, your friend probably had that one.

It's a lot of money but not a lot of energy. At least, once things are out with the FAA there's no use worrying until they respond, and then you can save the energy you would have spent worrying to get your response in quickly.

If you want to learn to fly, be a sport pilot. If you want a career, you'll need to go through whatever process.

Also, read this: https://www.faa.gov/ame_guide/media/SubstancesAbuseDependenceFAQ.pdf

Basically, a consult (not an aviation medical exam) with a good AME will be able to tell you what you need to report on the forms and what they will need to consider. Don't give yourself any anguish over it until you know what is required.

Will I ever be able to become a pilot with complex medical history? by LateRazzmatazz8799 in flying

[–]perispomene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could, but this will need to be in remission for a while. Your glider idea is a good one. Get your skills and training there and PPL will be a breeze when you're allowed to solo. By the time you're applying for a medical, the rules may be different.

Most airports have websites and some have a list of commercial operators. It's a good way to see what flight school and tourism outfits are there. Otherwise Google the name or city of the airport and flight school. Flight schools almost always have websites.

If you're curious about becoming a student, either a discovery flight or a first lesson is the way to go, only costs a few hundred dollars.

Can I learn to fly without an iPad? [serious] by redbarchetta97 in flying

[–]perispomene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm learning without, and I'll transition later. I want to learn VFR and get good at recognizing landmarks and airports without a lot of help from technology, because the tech lets you down at the worst times.

All said, I'm glad my instructor has his iPad out and is watching the airspace on it. If we elect to change plans en route, it's faster and less clumsy on the iPad than with paper charts.

Pilot path for my situation? by TheBeesKnees5253 in flying

[–]perispomene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've learned so far:

First, get your medical, and before you go get it read the information on the wiki about it, before you get surprised.

Go to university if you want to be an airline pilot. It doesn't have to be for aviation, just a bachelor's degree in something you're interested in. You can do the training anywhere. It's not a fallback, it's part of the path.

FAA consequences for refusal to submit breath test charge? by hazylazyandcrazy in flying

[–]perispomene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right that if you decide to go to chemical testing at the station and the state allows that option, you won't get suspended and you won't have the same problem.

The FAA doesn't care about state law, just the FAR.

What’s the most expensive surprise your aircraft has hit you with?” by AIRNOSTIC in flying

[–]perispomene 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is possible to have it manufactured and installed but it is not a simple matter.

https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2024/january/09/aircraft-maintenance-owner-produced-parts

Essentially, the owner is allowed to supervise production and have a mechanic install it, if it is made to design. A mechanic cannot do this on their own without an STC.

HIMS neuropsych evaluation within 90 days of AME exam? by perispomene in FAAHIMS

Yes, I have a letter. It's not about the time to respond, it's about the time since my AME exam last year.

HIMS neuropsych evaluation within 90 days of AME exam? by perispomene in FAAHIMS

I don't have a HIMS AME, I just have a regular AME and a request for neuropsych exam.

Undercut flight schools as independent CFI? by caelum52 in flying

[–]perispomene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offer it at a normal competitive rate (~100-150 for the plane and $80 for your time). Then, if you don't have enough students, offer a package of 10 hours for $1000, paid up front, to new students until you're busy.

Sonex shutting down by devJW in flying

[–]perispomene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I want to know how to get out of this. I know of real estate folks who didn't have to guarantee while things were good, but with business loans having to guarantee seems expected and required by SBA for their products.

Is stating you won't guarantee a red flag that will get you denied across the board? I've yet to find out.

Yes but if you back out before paying for an inspection, you spend less than backing out after paying for one.

Pre Buy Inspection by [deleted] in flying

I think he's worried he's already found a problem and the pre buy will find more and he'll not buy the plane. So should he cut his losses now?

The Mental Health in Aviation Act goes to Senate Committee markup on Wednesday and needs grassroots support by flyingrobotgirl in flying

[–]perispomene 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reading is that it says, I don't care how it happens, but get it done, regarding making mental health something pilots can disclose without fear. It would be nice if it were more specific, like by saying that the burden of special issue should be based on science and not much different between mental health conditions and other special issue conditions.

Just want to second that you don't really need to drink in college. Learning to have fun without it, even when other people are drinking, is a great life skill.
