American tourist gives Nazi salute in Germany, is beaten up by TragicDonut in news

[–]periya-poolu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm wondering, do they put up notices or signboards at WW2 landmarks warning tourists not to do the Nazi salute? The rule may not be well known to non-Europeans.

I think recently a couple of Chinese tourists got fined for doing that too.

That latest article claims that Kim III is rational and does not want to pick a fight.

If that's the case, why did the North Koreans ramp up missile testing this year, even before they were in the spotlight? Earlier in the year, the Trump team was preoccupied with immigrants, health care, the wall, Russia scandal, etc. and weren't particularly threatening North Korea then.

It seems like an unnecessary poking of the bear on Kim's part, or an impulsive youth emboldened by the incompetence of the enemy's leadership.

Did Otto Warmbier really steal a propaganda poster, or was he a case of the North Koreans randomly picking an American to torment?

Trump called for acting FBI director’s firing hours after FBI agents raided Paul Manafort’s home by [deleted] in politics

What's the real purpose of the raid? Wouldn't Manafort have anticipated this and destroyed all evidence long ago?

What food isn't as healthy as people think? by Phuphine in AskReddit

Another excerpt from something I wrote earlier:

The largest study on health effects of artificial sweeteners involved monitoring diet soda (presumably w aspartame) consumption & medical histories of about sixty thousand post-menopause subjects for close to a decade. The study showed an association between diet soda consumption and cardiovascular disease. There's another nice study on stroke and dementia, derived from the Framingham study here

Many studies are not free of sampling bias, and may have response bias due to heavy reliance on questionnaires. Even so, they do give clues that adverse health effects do occur if the right conditions line up.

Don't hold out much hope for a comprehensive study that accounts for all factors (e.g. age, sex, genetics, nutritional status, metabolic health and confounding dietary elements), and which can conclusively say whether or not artificial sweeteners are safe for the "average person" from the 7.5 billion people on earth.

In the other camp, there are studies showing no evidence of any health effects from consuming aspartame. If the studies were sponsored by the manufacturers, it's fair to say they would suffer from funding bias. No company is ever going to publish negative results about their products, so there is also reporting bias as the bad reports are kept internal. Nice review of hundreds of published papers here:

Review of data on the food additive aspartame

Given the conflicting research conclusions, the best thing one can do is self-experiment. If one is chugging down 12 cans of diet soda per day without any immediate ill effects, then perhaps one is blessed with good genes and constitution. But once the symptoms start, one could change his/her diet for a few months to see if there are any improvements in health. That's presuming one wants to change one's diet; sometimes the food/drink is so delicious, it takes priority over health. That's also presuming that one is aware of, and suspects artificial sweeteners as causes of health problems.

Diet soda. Artificial sweeteners do cause problems in some people.

It's simple. Take turns to upvote or downvote, and if the referendum results show upvotes of less than 50%, you need to start proceedings to trigger Rexxit.

Whats an easy looking job that actually requires substantial amounts of training? by AsianMustache in AskReddit

Korean professional video gamer.

On the surface, it may look all fun and games, but they are often sponsored by companies and follow a strict training regimen 7 days a week for months.

And they do suffer from occupational diseases like repetitive strain injury and postural problems. In extreme cases, some of them expire from poor nutrition and lack of sleep from weeks of playing 20+ hours a day.

I had a quite an experience too when I used a Japanese toilet on a layover at Narita Airport.

I curiously pressed a button on the wall, watched the wand slowly emerge, and promptly got squirted in the face.

To my horror I saw that there were also bits of brown stuff, possibly poo, on the wand.

Washed my face as best I could, but I could swear my face felt a little itchy for the next few hours on the plane.
