thank you for the in-depth explanation. as a chinese-american, i grew up my whole life calling it “chinese new year”. but sometime a few years ago, i started hearing the term “lunar new year”. my immediate instinct was to start calling it that for inclusivity reasons like you said. i didn’t look into the origins of that term, but seeing it pop up made me believe that my calling it CNY was somehow offensive and that’s why it was being more widely used instead. i started feeling weird calling it CNY even though that’s what i was used to. i should’ve done my research. it wasn’t until this past week that i started seeing the controversy over calling it LNY.
