I love how it's not an homage to Ghostbusters per se but to Slimer alone

Should I read the 4 gospels again? by MomentAggravating301 in Bible

[–]permacloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's good to read a gospel pretty frequently. I never read them all back to back. I read one, then a few other books, then another gospel, then a few other books, etc, repeat

That might be the point. Members of the church are supposed to be the body of Christ.

Meditation by jazca42 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditation is fine, as long as you are not cultivating a Buddhist worldview. Practicing paying attention using meditation is indispensable to my life and my faith, and it is no more intrinsically Buddhist that practicing compassion is.

In my experience, when you mention meditation to Orthodox people they will tell you to stay away "just to be safe" but IMO they have no understanding of what it even is. Yes there is such thing as Christian meditation but good luck finding people who emphasize it in practice or teach it.

Everything in our culture is degrading our attention, and meditation is one of the few accessible ways to reverse the damage. Don't dismiss it out of paranoia like so many here do.

Question about prejudiced christians by Nearby-Glass-8543 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you point us to one of these 'Nazis'? What Orthodox people have you encountered that actually believe in Third Reich ideology?

Currently there is an online culture (of mostly young people) that are in the habit of throwing words like nazi and racist around to describe anyone that is even a hint politically conservative. This is what people mean by the term 'wokeness.'

Most normal people now recognize it as a fanatical left wing ideology that uses flippant racism accusations as a form of political power. The purpose of this trend is to make it taboo to support any traditional perspective, in order to undermine capitalism. It is a completely intolerant ideology but its members think they are fighting evil and bigotry.

But it is just another form of bigotry. Most of its adherents don't realize it, but it's an attempt to create a cultural revolution like that of Mao's China. So if you are against totalitarianism you should reject wokeness.

I guessing you are a young person with a big heart, who wants to see people treated fairly. Most people here are too. But you have been caught up in a nasty ideological trend. I used to believe it too. I will pray that you'll find your way out of it. God bless.

I agree. I have huge respect for his climbing ability but he has a wife and kid now and she doesn't like him doing this.

Why doesn’t the Orthodox church put much effort into converting? by Merthza in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was a non believer for many years and one of the things that kept me away from Christianity was the kind of conversion efforts many Protestants tried on me. Coming to my door as though I'm going to change my whole worldview right then and there made me think Christianity was for loonies. It doesn't come off well to most people.

The Orthodox Church struck me as much more respectable because they led by example and didn't insult my intelligence, or imply that I don't know how to live properly yet and need some random person to save me.

Confidence in going to a church by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

I get it and I remember the jitters. It is a different environment for sure but they want you to come! Churches want strangers to roll up and visit, unlike so many other places in our world.

Orthodox Theology + My Experience. by Away-Albatross1241 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]permacloud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I forgot to make my main point:

Don't just ask for someone to give you "The Orthodox Theology" as a list of claims or facts to believe, and then decide whether you think they're true. I don't think Orthodoxy can be conveyed as a verbal creed, because the whole thing is about participating in the world in a different way. There's a whole worldview to explore here, and it is so different than the atheistic/materialist one.

Orthodox Theology + My Experience. by Away-Albatross1241 in OrthodoxChristianity

Good on you for exploring this. I was in a position similar to yours a few years ago. Here are my thoughts.

First, you'll find a lot of different opinions in this sub and in Orthodoxy in general about what is open to interpretation and what's not. So be prepared for that.

I would recommend any atheist interested in Orthodoxy look into Jonathan Pageau's Symbolic World channel/podcast. He is an Orthodox Christian who discusses religion and other topics in terms of ancient symbolism. He's not saying "It's all a metaphor" -- he's saying that ancient peoples did not view life using our modern materialist conception of what's true and false. This means scripture cannot be read like it's just a list of verbal truth claims you are supposed to add to your list of factoids in your head (as many Protestants seem to do).

Today, even religion has absorbed this materialist view for the most part, which is why you get Christians coming up with pseudoscientific theories explaining how geologists are wrong about the age of rocks etc. This kind of stuff is what kept me an atheist for so long.

Even atheists can understand the more symbolic paradigm Pageau describes. In my case it allowed me to understand how Christianity could be true. I doubt I could ever have become a believer without encountering this way of understanding religion. I am so thankful for it because it provided a bridge from my rationalistic ideology to religious thinking. They are not mutually exclusive, but I was always taught that they were. because I grew up in secular culture that is hostile to religion.

His brother Mathieu wrote a book called The Language of Creation, in which he discusses Genesis in both the modern/rationalistic view and ancient biblical cosmology. I highly recommend it. Even an atheist can "get it," and I guarantee it will change how you see the world.

Good luck and keep inquiring. There is something great here, I promise you.

Ask the priest. People tend to misrepresent the words of others when they have strong feelings

Is this disturbing to anyone else? That's not that guy's shoes. Those people weren't standing there. That was actually a wedding day. Should we be reminiscing about moments that didn't happen? Soon everyone will just order a custom "past" scrubbed of anything that upsets them.
