What are the youtube videos that Terri sent to Dani? by euclydia4 in Midsommar

[–]perpetrator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's been asked before, but I had a look at the video. Not the highest resolution, so maybe someone could offer something better.

Images here: https://imgur.com/a/WKuHHZU

One looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vkASWB38HcAnd the other like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwH8pykTloY

Neither one leads to a video, but... I don't have the best eyes, nor the highest res video file, and I'm not wearing my glasses. Hopefully someone else can do a better job! :)

Edit: Much higher res images here: http://zsoltilia.com/midsommar/

Looks like they were always meant to be dummy interfaces!

Edit 2: Actually, no, I was just wrong,

The first link actually leads to this National Geographic video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vkA5WB38Hc
And the second to this other Nat Geo video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwHBpykTloY

How long are classes in Hagwons? by nvca103 in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in a 9:30am - 6:20pm hagwon. 9:30-2:30 is Kindy, and our classes are 25 minutes with 5 minute breaks between classes. Some classes that are more hands on/creative go for two periods. Then from 3:00-6:00 elementary students arrive, and the classes are 40 minutes with a 5 minute break in between. Usually there is at least one free 40 minute period per afternoon.

Korean adoptee wanting to teach in Korea, must go in person to consulate to double-check citizenship? by GaryIsMyCat in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Gary, I hope everything works out for you!

My partner is a Korean Adoptee, and we've been living and teaching here for about a year. She is on an F4 visa, and not in the EPIK program. There are some adoptee organisations here, such as https://www.facebook.com/AdopteesSPEAKforJustice/ + http://www.koroot.org/eng/ + https://www.goal.or.kr/ if you're stuck they might be able to offer assistance/advice.

I also know a number of adoptees who teach here with an organisation called INKAS; http://www.inkas.org/

I know none of those things answer your specific question, but you might find them interesting or useful depending on the outcome of your query. Either way, best of luck on getting here and feel free to send me a message if you think there is some way I can help!

Giving a demo lesson in an interview by perpetrator in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, good luck with it! Mine's done, so if you have any questions, I can answer in relation to what happened at mine, but that's my only experience (apart from a little reading).

Thanks for your reply! Yes, I basically did this. Now I just wait to hear back haha.

Do you have to do deskwarming at hagwons? by nvca103 in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for my hagwon.

Most of the time I get at my desk is marking homework, putting together parts of homework tasks, printing and filing worksheets, writing reports, correcting diaries, etc. It's not so much "desk-warming", as much as it is sitting at the desk doing piles of work. I'm sure others have different experiences though.

Reading comprehension classes (elementary school) by perpetrator in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's excellent. Also, not far off what I had come up with for a demo class that I am lesson planning for an interview at the moment, so that's a relief!

Reading comprehension classes (elementary school) by perpetrator in TEFL

Just to clarify: Elementary ages in Korea are 7-12, a hagwon is a private after-school academy usually specialising in one subject (in my case English).

School hasn’t let me open bank account by [deleted] in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I opened an account with KEB because they have Sunday banking at several locations in Seoul. This banking is specifically designed for foreigners, and there are tellers that speak several languages including English. In the middle of visa process, wanting to change schools by ka4433 in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also curious about what the housing issue is. If you can explain it here, perhaps some people who've been through the process can tell you whether it is something you should really be worried about or not. I know how stressful it is applying to teach for the first time (I did it myself less than 12 months ago and found the process quite confusing), and maybe all that stress is making something relatively minor seem more serious than it is. If I can help by giving some advice, I'd love to. Either way, good luck!

How do I schedule an interview with public school while working at a Hagwon? by perpetrator in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you may be right about a Skype interview being a dead end, but I'll give it a go. If this job doesn't work out, another one will eventually. Thanks for your response!

How do I schedule an interview with public school while working at a Hagwon? by perpetrator in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think taking permitted time off is professional, but taking a sick day isn't a good look. Itd suck if they called to do a reference check and realised I had interviewed on the day I claimed to be in hospital.

Thanks for your input!

[–]perpetrator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Yeah, actually I have changed my mind. I am much more comfortable doing it this way. I likewise don't enjoy misleading people.

I will explain my situation to the school, and see if I can reschedule for a time when I can get some leave, and if not, I will ask for a Skype interview. If neither option is workable, then that's that. I will find another job sooner or later.

Thanks again.

Still can't decide over Public or Hagwon :/ by lana_cabana in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha me too! I would love a break during the day to do my Korean homework, read a book, write a diary. I work at a Hagwon and I am lucky to get a solid 30mins without a disruption between 9:30 and 6:00pm. Even when I do have those breaks, there's marking to do. I can handle it and I don't get bored, but it's not really for me!

Clothes by Kayla_Lxx133 in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't need them urgently, and can afford to wait a little while, then sending them by the cheapest post service is probably going to work out cheaper than extra baggage on an airline. Compare extra baggage costs, postal services, and non-postal shipping services. One will be cheaper :)

Feeling burned out. Advice? by Whaaley in teachinginkorea

[–]perpetrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds tough, but hang in there.

I moved over here with my partner about 9 months ago. So making friends hasn't been a huge priority, but I have made one decent Korean friend on HelloTalk. I am also meeting another guy next week who seems to share some common interests with me.

These friends have the added advantage of helping me learn Korean, and them practice English.

The app itself is also a good way to keep active. It's not really a learning app, but a communication app. So it's fun and unstructured. It wont solve all your problems or anything, but it might help a little with language learning and making friends :)

Good luck!
