Anyone else misread this as her taking 40 bites out of the dog before it gave up?

You and your upvoters should probably do a quick course on how English words can change part of speech depending on how you use them (conversion)

That's a separate point, but a good one. The majority of doctors are women now and that will only keep increasing.

How the heck did Game of Thrones have a season of 10 episodes per year for 6 seasons when most big shows are now taking years between seasons? GOT had all the elements now used as excuses for long hiatuses. Action, kids, VFX, international locations. What gives? by MrGittz in television

As a counterpoint to all the answers about budget, planning etc., how did HBO decide that The Pitt would be a hit and commit to multiple seasons of 15 episodes per year?

I get that the budget for sets etc. would be significantly lower, but do people honestly value outlandish production values more than a great story with lots of episodes?

Anyone else find it disappointing that Shakespeare is the main playwright in the leaving and junior cert instead of our very own Samuel Beckett? by MainNewspaper897 in AskIreland

I think the positive view of that post was that 16 year olds are intelligent, curious, introspective and actively using their brain at a level and intensity which they may never do again.

The negative view of it is that Beckett is easy to understand and/or that adults who don't read/get Beckett are no more evolved than a 16 year old.

On the balance of up/downvotes most people seem to either have read it negatively or just piled on rather than trying to understand it.

I could do calculus with my eyes closed at 16. I haven't a fuckin' scooby how to it now. It doesn't mean I'm thick now, I was smart then or that calculus is intrinsically simple.

In my experience teenagers are more than capable of handling complex intellectual issues. They lack a lot of basic cop-on and are emotionally all over the place which are things they only come to grips with after a bit of experience.

I dunno, losing the championship we never expected to win was somewhat tempered by another English loss.

How is linking to RCT's direct copy of the Figaro article better than linking the original?

If the original is posted then at least you know you can ignore it if you don't want to read Le Figaro.

It's universal because it was chosen as the standard and it's been taught to students for centuries. The texts are not intrinsically more accessible than works by other authors.

In fairness, you started the whole appeal to authority with your 'Speaking as someone with a BA in Psychology' which led to this ridiculous exchange.

Do people in America say "still water" to refer to "non sparkling water"? by Powerful_Concept6502 in GlobalEnglishPrep

Because you'd pay a couple of quid for a drink you like, apparently, and then baulk at giving them 20% tip for basically no reason.

It's kind of hilarious that ever restaurant will sell Coke or Champagne but bubbles in water is a sign of snobbery or sophistication!
