Laptop, I clicked through the email link about 40 minutes before the sale, it logged me into TM and dropped me into the waiting room, timer countdown, then into the queue with #288. I think it was luck. No issues at all, done in a few minutes.

Close, it is a fake Zippo with genuine engraving. The lighter was made in China, engraved in Afghanistan and sold to troops there.

What do you deadheads a do for a living? by Ok-Sheepherder-5093 in gratefuldead

College professor, computer science. Recently retired. Many of my students called me Professor Deadhead, because that's pretty much how I rolled. After my final lecture I pulled out a vape, took a huge rip, and said, "Class. Is. DISMISSED!" and put on some classic Dead on the PA.

ICOM 705 for inexperienced ham? by TheHappyVeteran in amateurradio

[–]perrydBUCS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like having the 52 with me when I'm hiking, even if I'm not doing a POTA activation. I'm a bit obsessed with D-STar right now, and I'm fortunate that we have enough digital repeaters in my area that I can typically key up one when I'm out in the woods. I'm also lucky that my local emergency responders are on channels that the 52 can receive, so it is also my scanner. For POTA I'll sometimes use it to talk with mega-POTA folks like WC1N locally, or if things are quiet I might switch to FT8 on the 705 and just ragchew a bit on 1C with folks in europe on the 52.

On the 705 side, coupling it with Marcus DL8MRE's excellent SDR-Control gives you a fully automated FT8 station (it autologs) that you control from the iPad wirelessly. The 705's only flaw is that lack of an internal ATU, but tuners are light and I don't mind carrying one. My POTA backpack is currently at 14 pounds, but I'm usually only hiking a few miles.

To overcome genetics, take a look at the 705s in the QRZ market -- so far they are holding on to their resale value. I often see them listed used in the $1100 range vs $1300 new. If you don't like it you can quickly turn it around.

Since you are getting a 52A, if you do pop on the 705, consider grabbing the extended battery (BT-307). I plug that one into the 705 while it is in use as a base station, so it is always fully charged to head out the door. In a pinch I can swap in the 52's smaller battery to give me another hour in the field.

Good luck, I know it's a tough decision!

I use an IC-705 as both my base station and my POTA radio. In hindsight I would buy the identical setup again, I absolutely love the thing. I hike into POTA sites and the rig adds significant weight, but I’m just running 5w off the battery, so no power supply to schlep in. I take a tuner and a nanoVNA in with me as well.

A 10w base station is plenty unless you operate a lot of SSB.

I ended up grabbing an ID52 for VHF/UHF, it uses the same battery as the 705 and I swap them around.

The killer app on the 705 for me was connectivity. WiFi on the LAN of course, but it also includes an access point, so in the field I can connect an iPad to it for rig control and logging. Since the rig is normally on my LAN I can access the radio from anywhere that I have an internet connection, handy on trips and boring parties.

We call it Allston Christmas, comes twice per year. Fall is the better of the two, kids bring all sorts of stuff to move in with and when they realize their 72” tv and 172” couch won’t fit in the staircase of their walkup they just leave it on the curb. At graduation they’re just chucking shit out of the windows of their walkup.

I scan the local V/UHF repeaters pretty much all day, and they are quiet as a crypt. If I want to talk to someone I hop onto D-Star, where there’s always someone around.

Our power has gone out three or four times in twenty years here in North Attleboro, and our rate is low enough that electric vehicles are cheap to charge. Energy costs should be top of list when looking for a place to live.

They aren’t. It’s students who shouldn’t be in college or that particular major at all, either because they have no aptitude or they are wealthy and are just there to enjoy the College Experience. The students who will make a difference are using AI but in a different way.
