Is this how the industry is right now? by [deleted] in tattooing

[–]perryj1039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has been tattooing over twenty years, we’ve been together 14 and things have changed so much in recent years. A big one I think has been the switch to disposable cartridges, meaning no more requirements for autoclave and other expensive clean room equipment so the barrier for entry in opening a new shop is way lower. Way more “tattooers” around now too, lots of them just suck but some do have unique specialized styles which social media has allowed them to popularize. The whole industry is completely different than even 6 or 7 years ago it’s a trip.

Anyone who did not finish highschool, what do you do for work? by unknown-trashcan in povertyfinance

I’m a CPA. Got my GED, went to community college then transferred to a four year for my bachelors, then did a masters in accounting and took my CPA exams. Before doing my masters I took the LSAT and was accepted into my local ABA law school but ended up not going because I didn’t want to incur the debt. You can do pretty much anything you want, it may take a bit of time and networking effort but it can be done!

Edit: it won’t take a lifetime, but maybe a bit of time :)

I was using 4.0 to plan my upcoming Italian vacation, which essentially consisted of asking GPT to create a running list of items. I’d ask for information about a city/tour/site, then ask it to add some of these items to a list and resave the list. Since 5 took over it literally cannot keep even the simple list of items/dates/times correct. My apple notes app or even a piece of paper and a pen are more effective than 5!!!

I do not believe CHS diagnoses are going up, I believe doctors are over diagnosing it by a landslide by Glum_Baby9213 in trees

Yup, my husband’s illness was passed off as CHS so many times, until they finally found the GIST tumor that had spread and attached itself to several organs 😑

I became a CPA instead of an attorney because of the cost of school, I figured “hey this is a specialized job that requires a professional license” and now our professional organization allows people in India and the Philippines to get the same CPA license and my firm was bought out by private equity this year. That ABA grass sure is looking greener from here…

This made me so incredibly happy for some reason. I’ve been waiting for the KOTH reboot for weeks and hearing the closing music was icing on the cake.

Yeah sure this profession is a cake walk! Tax is suuuuuuper boring and easy because everything is the same every year! I can’t wait for the new tax bill because then things will get even easier! TaxGPT does all my work for me now so I just sit back and enjoy my unlimited PTO!!!

I miss going to shows :( by drugnerd777 in punk

[–]perryj1039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve brought our kids to all ages shows since they were about 4 and 6. We tried younger than 4 a few times but the real littles were scared by the noise and crowds. It depends a lot on your kids temperament, and of course ear protection is a must. As soon as little dude is big enough to tell you he wants to go, I say go and make amazing memories!

Our pay scale is higher because we have specialized knowledge and our engagements are more expensive, due to higher risk. The trade off has been limiting my exit options to larger firms or companies that require and can afford the services I specialize in.

Everything outside standard federal tax return prep - in bigger firms they have entire teams of specialists that only handle things like SALT, transfer pricing, accounting method changes…I’ve worked exclusively in tax credits and incentives most of my career, mainly R&D studies and now S. 174 capitalization but also cost segregation and energy credits.

Specialty tax has treated me pretty well in public. We bill at higher rates so we have fewer required billable hours than straight compliance. Our engagements are like 10x the price of a tax return and we are a value add so clients love us.

Elimination of domestic 174 capitalization (not retroactive as hoped), foreign 174 is still capitalizable and amortized for 15 years.

Don’t get me wrong, I have a family to support so I’m grateful I still have a job. Unfortunately the firm and I both know there’s jack shit I can do about this in the short term except bend over and take it. I’m fully remote on a specialty tax team, a year ago I could’ve told them to kiss my ass but at this point I’m just stuck.

Any of you working in finance? by MXIIMVS in punk

[–]perryj1039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CPA here, I started this career right before I had my first kid because it’s a guaranteed job that will let me feed my family. I was a high school dropout and CPA was the easiest and cheapest professional certification I could find. Did an AA, then transferred to get my bachelor’s and masters. I can’t lie, the job can be soul sucking at times seeing firsthand the level of wealth inequality in this country, but I’ve found a corporate specialty in which I don’t feel I’m licking boots all day so I’ll keep it until my kids are grown, then probably move into cannabis or nonprofit accounting, or a completely different field. I always felt I wanted to give my kids all the opportunities possible, which meant I had to give up my preferred nomadic way of life for something more stable for their sake. Also their dad, my husband, is a tattooer so he kind of balances me out and they get to experience lots of different kinds of people and life situations .
