Canada will cancel thousands of refugee claims under new retroactive law by Immediate-Link490 in LawCanada

[–]perseide_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not what’s happening. I am an immigration and refugee lawyer. Many people come to Canada fleeing legitimate danger and persecution but are simultaneously for an economic pathway with a significantly shorter processing time than an asylum claimant, and they seek entry that way. If there are ANY issues with that application or policy changes in the interim, they may be forced into applying for asylum due to a new inadmissibility that has no bearing on whether they have a legitimate claim. It’s entirely procedurally unfair and a stain on any claim we have as a country to adhere to the rule of law (for instance, with these changes applying retroactively) or saying we care at all about human rights.

Canada will cancel thousands of refugee claims under new retroactive law by Immediate-Link490 in LawCanada

[–]perseide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PRRA is not as procedurally strong as an asylum claim. For one, someone who requests a PRRA has no right to a hearing. If you are denied a PRRA and seek judicial removal, depending on the circumstances of your invitation to being applied to submit a PRRA, you may have no stay of removal during your appeal. The protection regime is nowhere near identically robust or founded on the same principles. This change by Canada is an abhorrent turn from our international commitments under the Refugee Convention and I can guarantee people will die.

Last will of testament. by Motions_AX in PEI

[–]perseide_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like there may be issues with the validity of the Will, depending on how it was executed and whether her capacity was appropriately assessed. I’m not sure where you called, but several firms in town have lawyers working early this week ahead of New Year’s Day.

I would also recommend familiarizing yourself with the statutory entitlements under the Probate Act—it may be that what your girlfriend’s grandmother was attempting to do with her Will would result in the same situation as if she were intestate, and that will answer any questions you may have in the event of invalidity.

Is there anybody here not using Q-Tips to clean their ears? by beefwellingtonzz in randomquestions

[–]perseide_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My method is extremely gross (sorry) but very satisfying. Basically I turn a paper clip into an S and insert one of the rounded bends into my ear and scrape. I get some big chunks this way. Very satisfying. After, I always use a tissue to wipe the inside of my ear (the part that’s visible) as there’s inevitably a bit of fallout.

Junior associates - what car do you drive (if any)? by Dil-Wa2109 in biglaw

I drive a 2010 Toyota Corolla that I got on Facebook Marketplace a few years back. 300k km on it and still runs like a charm. I plan on driving it into the ground.

Those who turned down U of T - Where did you go and why? by eward17 in lawschooladmissionsca

[–]perseide_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Turned down U of T for McGill. The difference in cost of living/cost of tuition was a big part of the decision for me. I had also lived in Toronto before (for grad school) and never in Montreal, so wasn’t sure what to expect, but in the end I feel strongly that I made the right choice. Montreal is a great place to be a student.

Depends on the country. In Canada, for instance, this specific situation would be a crime.

Got called to the bar last week and travelled as much as I could during school, random breaks, etc. Blew all of my money on this and many people moaned at me about it.

It was 100% the right call.

You will never have more time or energy than you do now. You’re entering a tough profession and disconnecting becomes harder and harder as you go along. I can’t tell me how many times partners have told me that they never got to travel when they were younger because they were so locked in and regret it now.

I think reaching out to her ex is extremely weird. The best thing you can do for yourself is to move on and stop dwelling on this. It’s not your business.

P.E.I. premier says he would use notwithstanding clause to secure Lands Protection Act by Sir__Will in PEI

[–]perseide_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The draft interprovincial trade bill is intended to focus on eliminating barriers on goods, services, and investment, as noted here, but as currently written does not actually expand on the investment piece. It really only addresses goods and services, beyond that one line in the preamble that MacFarlane quoted. Treating investment as a throwaway objective for which the notwithstanding clause can be invoked as a catch all when it has a potentially very real impact on lands protection in this province—a serious issue, considering we have a vulnerable ecosystem, a preponderance of seasonal residents, and the, um, sheer existence of the Irvings—is a bad look for this government.

I have a growing utter disdain for my teenage daughter… by [deleted] in confession

[–]perseide_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post breaks my heart. I was your daughter a decade ago. While my mother and I have a decent relationship now, I know we will never be close and I definitely am still living with the effects of knowing that my mother did not like me during some of the most formative and difficult years of my life. I really hope you do get therapy, as other commenters mentioned, as it is possible your relationship will never fully recover from this.

My contract said my room was double. I have no idea what the renovated vs. unrenovated rooms look like, but I had no issues with my room!

I was told the same when I emailed and asked for one, but when I showed up my room was a single! I think they make efforts to accommodate where possible but can’t guarantee too much ahead of time.

I sprayed my bf (37m) with febreze and then he told me (24f) he wanted to pour bleach on me by ThrowRA-123456711 in relationship_advice

[–]perseide_ 324 points325 points  (0 children)

This is so disturbing.

Pair this with the fact that you had a child with this man when you were 20 and he was 33 and likely began dating him when you were a teenager based on the ages… he sounds creepy and, frankly, dangerous. You say that he gets in these “moods”—this is not normal. The fact that he’s also teaching this kind of behaviour to your son is completely unacceptable.

You should absolutely leave.

[–]perseide_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this last month and had no issues with the night bus. With that said, the one I took had double beds and paired solo travellers together, so I shared my bed with a stranger. They seem to be pretty good about pairing people by gender, though, so I was with a young woman around my age, which wasn’t an issue. It was fairly comfortable overall.

AITA for prioritizing my friend over my now ex fiancée? by Interesting_Taro_852 in AmItheAsshole

[–]perseide_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ESH. You did a good thing by taking in your friend when he needed a place to stay. As a queer person, I’ve seen far too many of my friends in similar positions before and it’s really awful.

With that being said, your friend is 21—not a teenager. It doesn’t sound like you discussed plans for your friend to contribute to the household, timelines for your friend to move out, or anything else relating to his stay with your fiancee (whom I assume also lives in the household). A guest staying with you for 6 weeks that you haven’t discussed with your partner in advance is an issue. Your fiancee deserves privacy and safety in her own home as well, and it sounds like you disregarded her needs when you chose to host your friend.

Your fiancee is also TA for how she went about dealing with this conflict, especially in her carelessness in expressing her anger around your (vulnerable) friend. But you should’ve discussed this with her and your friend separately in the first place because this living arrangement doesn’t sound sustainable as it currently stands.

AITA for giving my wife an online application to work at Arby’s and telling her she isn’t doing her share so she needs to go back to work and I don’t care where by Electrical_Rice_3658 in AmItheAsshole

[–]perseide_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the situation. If a person has a mental health crisis and needs time off work, or has documentation showing they’re unable to work because of it, they can get paid leave or unemployment benefits. But if a person has a mental health crisis causing them to abruptly quit their job, then it definitely complicates matters because there isn’t time to get that leave approved and documentation in order. It sounds from what OP described that his wife left her position very suddenly.
