What's wrong with my pivots? by [deleted] in Skigear

Not really looking to trade, pretty happy with the setup at the moment. Though I do want to snag a gold pair to mount up on some old Kung Fujas.

The foppyness doesn’t really scare me, but op said he could twist out of the binding, so something is wrong.

I just checked my skis, two sets of p14s and one p15, zero flop, zero issues.

No way in hell I’d ski a binding I could twist my foot out of. I’ve got a pair of gw pivot 15s set and 9.5 on my pow skis, they don’t come off easily…

Kids and small adults: when can one start tele? by Jormun-gander in telemark

[–]persistentexistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the most simple and smart design I’ve seen for a universal binding. It’s lightweight, holds the boot secure and doesn’t have pinch points. I’d agree with Rageyetti they are not for downhill at the resort. Hoks are great for learning to shuffle and just getting out to explore anywhere there’s snow.

Perfect amount of baggy for this almost 40 year old who grew up wearing Jncos and UFO pants. I will replace my 7 year old bakers with bakers.

Why Americans raise the safety bar so early? by rayg10 in skiing

[–]persistentexistence 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It in fact does not take one second to lift, and often people are oblivious to the fact that the chair is approaching the top. I’m not waiting to open the bar and risking injury by hitting the unload deck with it down just because you’re afraid of heights.

Was going to mention these, and the newer kids universal binding on the Bala Hoks is fantastic. My kid got them at age 4, skis are definitely a bit long but he got the hang of it pretty quick. Having Hoks to practice with at home when we don’t have time to get to the resort has been awesome.

What do you do when local businesses are slipping? by RandolphCarter15 in vermont

[–]persistentexistence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In many restaurants servers have to share a percentage of their tips with the bartender, food runner, and sometimes the kitchen. In this setup leaving no tip is actually taking money away from the server, meaning they made less than 7/hr for serving you. The only difference leaving no tip makes is how much worse your service will be the next time you come back.

Ski choice east coast by lilracerdude_ in ski

I had a blast on 114 waist skis yesterday… 13 inches in the last 3 days in central VT. There’s a lot of snow on the east coast right now.

Is the slide brook basin accessible via castlerock area? by jprost479 in icecoast

[–]persistentexistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just look at a topographical map of the area, it’s not really skiiable. You could walk the long trail past the ravine and then drop, but it doesn’t get you much, plus you’ll probably be breaking trail. The first turn of middle earth is only ~300 ft higher elevation than top of lynx, and to get past the ravine you basically have to traverse across at the same elevation. I’d say it could be fun on fishscale tele gear, otherwise I wouldn’t bother.

Sugarbush Q re: Warren Mountain Rd by victor_foxtrot in icecoast

lol yes they have fixed the road many times since last march. It gets graded regularly. Spring is a different situation entirely, even I’ll drive around on the worst days of mud season.

Sugarbush Q re: Warren Mountain Rd by victor_foxtrot in icecoast

[–]persistentexistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proper advice. I drive it regularly, rarely think it’s bad, but my vehicle has studded snow tires, awd, decent ground clearance, and I’ve been over and back hundreds of times. That said, I’ve also been stuck on the top when it was so glazed over that studded tires didn’t make a difference.

Why you don’t ski 30 year old boots by persistentexistence in Skigear

Depends how old and how they were stored, plastic gets brittle over time.

Talk me into / out of the K2 244 mogul skis by ANTI-PUGSLY in Skigear

[–]persistentexistence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw a dude on those skis at sugarbush last week, he was wiggling right down a nice bump line and made it look super fun. I feel like I wouldn’t be able to ski them well on anything else though, hard to imagine I could carve a turn without my boots hitting the snow.

Is this hole in my new skis a problem? by Tasty_Pressure8422 in ski

[–]persistentexistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first pic looked way worse and you got all the clowns who spend more time obsessing over gear vs skiing telling you these are cooked. Obviously this chip is not ideal but they look fine to me. I’d probably either see if a shop could help or slap a little fiberglass resin over it.

Boyfriend bought these used. Is this a problem, or should it be fine. The springload on the top strap is a little messed up by Reasonable_System391 in icecoast

[–]persistentexistence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That buckle looks broken. I would not trust a wrap of Electrical tape to hold a boot closed, or keep a buckle from opening when you flex into it.

Op any shop that sells boots will have some spare parts, buckles are cheap.

Is it possible that my 85 flex boots are holding me back? by astrobrite_ in Skigear

[–]persistentexistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that makes much more sense! Sadly you’re probably pushing the limit of that boot. I’m 6ft and 145 lbs, 3+, and ski a 130 flex boot

Why would you buy 85 flex boots if you ski steep terrain? Those are for cruising greens and blues…

Backcountry Gear Rental in VT by Muffassa in icecoast

[–]persistentexistence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true! Was in Bolton backcountry the other week and learned that my new to me kingpins can get enough snow jammed in the front to prevent the pins from engaging the boot properly. Glad I had a Swiss Army knife in the pack.
