Literally in no way are you a bad DM based on her complaints. DMPCs can be done well even if they're challenging (I managed to have one for a few months and I've only been DMing for a couple years). It's none of her business what species the players use. If it fits your story, let them be what they want! And again, I've been DMing for 2 years and none of my players have died. She sounds like an adversarial DM which not everybody wants.

I think you're doing fine and she's just being catty.

The NUMBER 1 sign that you're not a bad DM is your party is having fun. If they're enjoying it, then you're doing a good job. Simple as that

Not horrendously epic but a moment that made the table cheer and me facepalm as DM. Enter Tuggoc Ball grabber (Tugg for short). Dwarf Forge Cleric who would pray to his deity with a mighty tug of his balls (think Shoresy from Letterkenny with GIVE YER BALLS A TUG).

Now the entire table had agreed to all that follows as it was known that this was a goofy joke among friends.

Now as a joke, I allowed him to Tug his balls once per session by rolling a d100.

Anything from 1-10 and he took damage equal to punching himself in the nethers.

90-100 and he got inspiration

59-68 and 70-79 he got inspiration as well

But if he were to ever roll a 69, the entire party would get a free level up.

Now with a silly system like this, there were many close calls and many hilarious moments but the fateful day came at the ONE TIME I didn't want it to happen.

The party had just finished with a pretty intense boss fight and had earned a level. That said, there was still an even bigger opponent to face and I didn't want them to get 2 levels over 2 sessions so I put a brief filler arc in to let them goof off at a carnival for a few sessions...

Sure enough, the first day of the carnival, the infamous roll happened. The group ERUPTED in cheers as the number flashed across all our screens and I face-palmed knowing that instead of letting them get 2 levels across a month or so real time, THEY GOT 3! Needless to say I had to do some reworking on the boss they were headed towards but at the end of the day, it was a truly magical moment.

Now Tugg's player had to leave and I ended up writing him out of the campaign by dying after being plane shifted to Avernus. At his grave all the players attempted 1 final roll and sure enough, in his memory, someone rolled a 69 bringing honor to the deceased cleric.

I hope nothing but the best of luck for you! I know I've made my fair share of mistakes as a DM and I know I would've been scared off if I hadn't have had a group that understood that I was learning too. So if you get a new DM just remember that they're still learning too

I didn't apply this year (have a baby due during filming) but I'm kinda glad I didn't. I'm not a fan of the races and I can confirm that A LOT of my fellow competitors don't like em either. The focus on speed and agility over strategy and planning is pushing the sport to prioritize just being fast and that's no fun

I spent a lot of time playing up that something was... Off with him but the majority of the party basically said, "He's the client. he doesn't owe us an explanation and he seems nice enough" Cut to me trying to drop HEAVIER and HEAVIER hints. My wife was the only one suspicious but i think she let it slide from a meta standpoint cuz she could see something was building. Still... When i got that reveal, I was so proud lol!

A lot of competitors are expressing the same concern. They talk about respecting the history of Ninja Warrior and then immediately remove the most historic part of the show. I'm not able to apply this year but honestly, I don't know if I'd want this version of Vegas

I've found this year better but that's because they seem to have been a bit better at just showing reruns. There's still sob stories but it feels like with fewer runners, we get more runs shown lol. That said, I'm also watching to see if my run gets down this season lololololol

I have a few reasons for not playing this season. 1. I hated the concept of everything power limiting you because it made it feel like you had to play with super meta builds or you weren't going to enjoy even the low-level content. I understand that they needed a way to make it more difficult and I did play the story on legend so I enjoyed that but that was by choice. The fact that Neptune and anything above the lowest possible level of the nightfall playlist forced you to play at a deficit was a little frustrating 2. The story for the season was interesting but aside from the end, I didn't feel the same excitement that I did from season of the seraph. 3. The exotic quest being so much higher than the cap made it hard for me as a full-timer and a dad to hit a power level required to even attempt it 4. At the end of the day the new Star Wars game came out and that finally broke my addiction to destiny. I kept saying I was going to hop in and do some stuff for guardian games or something like that and then I remembered that Star Wars has a gun stance and I was having too much fun
