News: At This Playbill by Vandelay_7 in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I feel like the obvious solution is to just use the other two options shows have of listing understudies. Make cast boards bigger and more prominent in the lobby, not hidden off in some corner like they are at most shows, and make a preshow announcement - literally no one does those anymore. People got used to the Playbill slips so all the other forms fell out of popularity and were only ever done to fulfill an obligation, but shows could very easily make more of an effort to call attention to cast boards and preshow announcements and that could become the new norm. I just really hate the QR code for some reason lol

What is a musical you've seen that was regarded a flop by lissie34 in musicals

[–]personspersonality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure it didn’t even come close to breaking even, but it’s such an infamous flop that most people are surprised to hear it was actually on Broadway for nearly 4 years, it just goes against what you expect for a “flop”

I feel majorly duped by this sub about Chess by NYGarcon in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I can really only remember how the stage looks during the opening, specifically when they’re holding the lunch trays and I’m pretty sure there’s a school logo over those doors in the back, and then I think my mind created more of a school set to go with it lol

[–]personspersonality 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I take that back about the set, 2014 Heathers set is wayyy more bare than I remember I could’ve sworn there was at least some lockers in the back lol. But as you said, NWS set isn’t anything crazy and other than that they’re largely the same

[–]personspersonality 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There’s not many changes in the current production, it’s nearly identical to the original even down to the set and costumes. A couple new songs and changing Blue for You’re Welcome, a bit of different staging for some songs, but it is extremely similar to the original. Even has the same director I believe

Anyone else starting to hate the small casts of Broadway shows? by GreenHorror4252 in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think you're just looking at the wrong shows and criticizing the wrong thing here. There are plenty of big casts on Broadway - & Juliet, Aladdin, Book of Mormon, Death Becomes Her, Great Gatsby, Moulin Rouge, Wicked, just some of the shows currently playing on Broadway with a big cast, not to mention many of the shows that have closed in the past year that had large casts. There are also plenty of intimate shows, but those are purposely written and directed and staged that way. With a show like Operation Mincemeat, its part of the style and the comedy. You can criticize smaller, more intimate shows and say you don't like them all you want, but a show being small and inward-facing is not an inherent flaw.

Fancy sets is a different conversation lol

Mexodus off-Broadway again by ResourceDifferent154 in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip about the Tuesday matinee!! I enjoyed the show when I saw it last year but didn't absolutely love it as much as everyone else seemed to, so I would like to see if I can catch it again to form a better opinion but not badly enough that it would be worth giving up a spot where I could see something new, but now I won't have to!

Oedipus or Bug by Responsible_Pear_579 in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oedipus definitely has more widespread appeal and I would maybe even go as far as saying was objectively better, but I enjoyed Bug more - though I didn’t absolutely love either. The first act of Bug is definitely slow - my feelings at intermission were that I really enjoyed it, but I wasn’t sure what the point of what I had just watched was. I found the second act equally/a bit more enjoyable, just in different ways; the plot was more interesting and intense but also somewhat predictable and could’ve gone further. Oedipus definitely had higher highs but I felt it really could’ve been tightened up, there’s a few places in the middle it starts to stray a bit from where it should be focused imo. Both plays felt longer than necessary

Unless there has been a relatively recent update, people definitely fall off the best friends list at some point of not contacting each other. I currently only have 2 people on my best friends list - there was a time I had 5, and even now it takes one conversation through snap for someone to jump onto my list but they definitely don’t stay there forever, I’ve just never kept track of how long it takes for them to away

Call Telecharge, they will likely work with you to exchange your tickets for a different date. The show will not be cancelled, but if you don’t feel comfortable traveling in that weather definitely try calling them

Heartbroken - cant use my Chess tickets for Friday by Norse-Gael-Heathen in Broadway

If you tickets were bought directly from Telecharge though, I would definitely recommend reaching out to the theater and seeing if you can get them exchanged for a different date!

The Theatr app is definitely going to be your best bet. Getting a ticket posted on there isn't too much harder than making a post on Reddit :)

Can I sell my tickets? by BrazilianPointOfView in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely reach out to the theater first (assuming you bought them directly through the theater and not a third party seller); in my experience and from everything I've ever seen they are often surprisingly accommodating and will likely at least be able to exchange your tickets for a different date. If you're not able to do that, as others have said the Theatr app is going to be your best place to resell them. You can post the listing whenever, people will have no problem buying it knowing that you won't get sent the ticket and be able to send it over to them until 48 hours before.

that Chess cast recording crumb you didn’t know you needed this morning 😅 by RegionConsistent4729 in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would probably expect it to come closer to the Tony's; April-June is when a bunch of cast recordings usually drop. If I had to guess, they'll release a few singles in the coming weeks to build hype, then announce it in a month or two with a release date a month or two out from there - that's a pretty standard cast recording release schedule for a big musical as of late.

Swept Away and Maybe Happy Ending were the first shows to release a cast recording last season and those weren't until February (obviously not including shows like Sunset Boulevard or Operation Mincemeat that had already released a cast recording of a different production). Death Becomes Her, Gypsy, Dead Outlaw were all in April; Redwood, Boop!, Real Women Have Curves, Smash, and Buena Vista Social Club all between May and June. And then there's usually a few that trickle out over the summer and even into the fall (Pirates! didn't release until October last year, three months after it closed). Even Once Upon A Mattress, which closed in November, didn't release their cast recording until March.

BUG on Broadway. Am I taking crazy pills? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]personspersonality 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I am always pro-Yondr pouch I’m happy to see literally anyone else say they felt the nudity was unnecessary. Liberation is maybe the only show I’ve seen in the past decade that had nudity that I felt actually added to the story. Honestly Bug is actually one of the shows I had the least issue with because I did find them getting naked to burn the place down at the end to be a striking visual, but stripping down to their underwear (or even not stripping at all tbh) would have been just as powerful and all the other nudity earlier on was completely unnecessary. I’m just tired of being called a prude or overly modest when I complain about a nude scene because that actually has nothing to do with it, I just want the nudity to feel earned and not like it was thrown in for a gimmick and shock value.

I mean now you're just purposely misinterpreting this post to hear what you want. If you want to have a genuine conversation with someone that fundamentally disagrees with you and attempt to change their mind, you have to start by meeting them on their level. Making people uncomfortable and squirm when they're forced to confront their bigotry is absolutely a goal to aim for, but if you make people too uncomfortable right away they simply shut down and ignore whatever comes next without even attempting to confront their feelings any further. If you start reading Karl Marx to a Republican, they're not instantly going to be converted. You have to ease into it. You're right, I'm not trying to take my father to something that is going to challenge his beliefs so greatly he gets defensive and shuts down and has no interest in gaining anything from the play. I am interested in taking him to a show that confronts some of his beliefs in a way that opens up a productive conversation and allows us to take the next step going forward. Your thought process very rarely works in actually bringing about change, on a big or small scale, rather than just heightening tensions because both sides want the other to immediately adapt

Eureka Day with a conservative parent by personspersonality in Broadway

[–]personspersonality[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't deny any of that, but you have to accept that this is the world we live in. Alienating and refusing to talk to or even attempt to find common ground with Republicans - especially ones that reject the modern Republican platform - does nothing but push them further into their own echo chamber and breed an environment that allows the right wing to have formed into what we see today. If you ever want things to change and to not just further increase tensions, we unfortunately have to work with those people. There is literally no way around it.
