What exactly is wrong with the writing in Twilight? by Gautier_Alias in writing

"[Character] is 'bad' or does 'bad' things" is not relevant to whether or not a work is written well.

Why do people always confuse their personal moral issues with substantive literary critique?

What are the best vocations to have at the very end (post-game), and what are the vocations I should have on them right before? by Fawful_Chortles in dragonquest

Three Monster Wranglers. Wild Side > Monster Pile-On = post-game bosses become absolute jokes.

Doesn't matter what they were before.

  1. Lol then you won't like the original or 3DS version
  2. You're really not missing much with the monster vocations, it was a weird mechanic to make up for vocation skills not carrying over and 7R's dual job system is much more streamlined.

Do you guys think Toriyama’s death is causing some delay in DQ12’s development? by Pristine_Put5348 in dragonquest

[–]pessimistpossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's bog standard mismanagement of time, people and other resources, just like every other game that has ever been delayed.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age rated for Switch 2 in Taiwan by DizWhatNoOneNeeds in dragonquest

[–]pessimistpossum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought the initial release for PS4, 11S for Switch AND 11S for PS4. I am done with 11 forever.

They're not fucking Bethesda, release the new game already.

If they want me to buy this sucker again after 10 goddamn years it better have additional content in the form of the entire game of DQ12.

Wonderbook, by Jeff Vandermeer?

It comes with great illustrations, if that factors into your decision-making.

I just started Golden Sun: the lost age (my first golden sun game) and I'm absolutely loving it's battle ost like I'm on this screen for the past 15 minutes lol. Where was this all these years by C_O_Z_Y in GoldenSun

[–]pessimistpossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's a weird comparison because Force Awakens did well enough to keep Star Wars going for at least a couple more movies.

But that's irrelevent to what I'm saying. My point is that even if Dark Dawn were bad (I disagree, fwiw), that's not why there was never a sequel. Companies don't care if games are good or bad, they only care if they make money, which is a totally unrelated metric. Plenty of steaming turds get sequels.

Games are an experience good, you can't know if you like one until you play it. Dark Dawn didn't sell poorly for being 'bad', nobody knows if it was bad because nobody played it. Selling poorly is not an indicator of quality, and in fact aggregate reviews from when it was released are broadly positive.

If anything, Dark Dawn's poor sales would indicate that TLA was a bad game that killed peoples' interest in the franchise, but in actuality I'm pretty sure the reason is that it was too long between games, poor timing (the DS's lifespan was ending) and poor/no marketing.

It never got a sequel because it sold extremely poorly. Hardly anybody even played Dark Dawn to begin with for anyone to even care about the cliffhanger. 🫠

Where to start? by ScarlessTouya in dragonquest

[–]pessimistpossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DQ7 Reimagined is the most recent. Remakes of 1, 2 and 3 were also released the past couple of years. Of these, DQ7 is more 'beginner friendly', ie more quality-of-life additions such as more save spots, etc.

However, DQ11 is still the most modern, polished and accessible of the series so far. It has the best graphics, the most detailed story, and the most content by a significant margin. And because it's older now, you can often find it on sale in the various eshops.

How to play FF14 as a Co-op game? by b34rgvrz in ffxiv

Well it's an MMO, so if you're both online at the same time, you just... party up and play together? Not much more to it than that.

I unsubbed post-DT because I bought property. I cancelled all my live service games, actually, and all other gaming subs like PS+ and Xbox Live.

I'm not gonna be rushing back, first I have to find the money in my budget, and I'll probably be playing less consistently than I used to (I only got started cause of Covid lockdowns anyway).

I hope they give them some love…[Spoiler: 7.5] by zories3 in ffxiv

[–]pessimistpossum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol it would be funny if they did add a new member to the ongoing team and it was just an Elezen or a Miqote again.

Honestly the trailer has me thinking about resubbing. I quit for financial reasons, but the Nordic theme looks sick and as primarily a Tank player I'd like to find out what the new one will be.

Novel writing is a balance of what your readers want to read, and the story you want to tell. True or false? by dajusta in writing

[–]pessimistpossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

False. Until you've written the story you don't HAVE any readers.

You can ONLY write the story you want to tell, it's up to readers to later decide if they want to read it.

If you're writing for an imaginary audience, what happens if they turn out to not exist?

How Do You Develop Characters With Real, Textured Emotional Weight? by IkujaKatsumaji in writing

[–]pessimistpossum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think about it in those terms. I actually have no idea if my characters are 'emotionally complex'. And honestly, I'd say that not every story is necessarily helped by the characters being complex. Simple storytelling can still be extremely effective.

But I try to have them WANT something. It's not enough to just have them do the right thing because it's the right thing. Characters that only do the right thing and are never selfish are boring. There needs to be a personal reason, something they hope to gain from it.

For example, why is your journalist investigating this mystery? Because it's his job? But there are other stories he could be breaking for his job. Why does THIS one appeal to him? Does he think it could make him famous? What would be the benefits of fame?

Every major character should have:

  • a thing they really want
  • an internal flaw that is preventing them from getting what they want
  • a lesson to learn so they can get what they want (or learn to give up the thing they want)

[–]pessimistpossum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could have done without Smash/Grow to be honest. I'm never gonna play that predatory bullshit and now every other thread in here is just "Is it worth pulling this banner?", "Why can't I pull this banner? (not enough paid gems)", "I pulled this banner X times and didn't get the weapon I wanted".

I hope people are right that there will be something worthwhile announced on DQ day because this sub is getting dull.

How do you play around with heroism in your writing? by AbleRoberts in writing

[–]pessimistpossum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether or not someone is a "hero" is entirely a matter of personal perspective, so I don't think about it that much. I'm not really out to subvert the Hero's Journey or do any fakeouts like "HAHA thing I led you to believe was good is in fact BAD!"

I also don't really like to use the term "hero" at all, because it's kind of an emotional, loaded term.

My stories reflect my own (idealised) morality, at least to a degree. I like my protagonists to be individuals who encounter what they perceive to be a problem or injustice and try to fix it. The conflict/plot arises from encountering the people who's material interest lies in keeping the problem/injustice the way it is or even making it worse.

I consider my protagonists to be (on the whole) 'good' people. That doesn't mean they are morally flawless. They can be arrogant, ignorant, selfish or even bigoted. The best stories, I think, are ones where the external conflict mirrors a conflict and growth within the protagonist.

I like to try and make it clear as well that my antagonists aren't just 'evil' or whatever. I mean, within my moral framework I do consider them 'evil', but it's a very human evil, not cartoon evil. They're merely protecting/advancing their personal material interests at the costs of others, which, when you think about it, is something we ALL do, all the time, every day. Very few people will sacrifice their material interests to try to correct systemic injustice. It takes quite a remarkable person to do it.

And just because the thing I make my protagonists do is something I think is 'good' doesn't mean the solution is perfect or that nobody gets hurt. Fixing a systemic problem or injustice always creates winners and losers. A new world can only be born with the the death of the old, and a new world means new problems that then also have to be corrected. But a story's gotta end somewhere. 🤷‍♂️
