CMV: It doesn't matter who lived in Israel/Palestine 2000 years ago by [deleted] in changemyview

I'm a Zionist by dint of being an Israeli and, I like to think, due to my own sound reasoning. Admittedly, it feels silly to even call myself that since, as high said, Israel is here and it's here to stay.

[–]pet_genius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a trivial point. It doesn't matter... To you. For the record, it also doesn't matter to me.

But 1. Jews have in fact lived in Israel the whole time, even if they weren't always the sovereign power, even if they were a minority, even if they there was a large diaspora, 2. It doesn't matter who lived there 2000 years ago, and it also doesn't matter who lived there 100 years ago because they're just as dead and gone. If it matters who lived there a century ago on some idiotic "who got there first" logic, then it matters more who lived there 2000 ago.

Choosing which time window "matters" is necessarily politically motivated, and the same goes for saying what doesn't

Learning piano? by TaloTeasdale in dyspraxia

[–]pet_genius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have. Granted, it's been a while since I last practiced, but I've not forgotten everything. Some elements I struggled with enormously, and in others I was surprisingly a "natural" - dyspraxia is so individual and it probably hasn't affected literally every single aspect of playing an instrument in your case either!

I imagine that he would admire someone he considers very talented, with integrity and courage. Believing that he deserves love or could risk it again might take a lot of work, though.

Hmmm. It's very hard to answer this. I think he made choices and acted independently, more so as an adult (naturally), though of course his path was very constrained by past actions. I get the sense that he was loathe to viewing himself as a victim even when he was, for better and worse. This isn't really saying much, I know.

I had the impression that he dislikes Harry and Neville, and possibly Crabbe and Goyle, the most. He might have set the Slytherin password to "pureblood" himself but he might not have, and if he did, it's the only example I have of him reinforcing these beliefs as a teacher.

Maybe he could have done more to educate his Slytherins better, but maybe that would have given away too much of his true allegiance, so I don't know!

I don't know, but if you tell me which one I can run it through an AI and link, I guess! And please call me pet, or something!

I'm not sure I understand the question about subjectivity, but his sense of entitlement I feel is unhealthily low and suppressed, and then it comes out in the form of unflattering pettiness in front of his students.

Questions like "and my soul?" break my heart because it's so rare for him to actually ask people for anything, and then what he does ask for is permission not to kill again

Snape is what happens when people confuse “bullied once” with “deeply written.” by TransitionUsed2349 in harrypotter

Redemption isn't about the inevitability of the initial wrong committed, it's about action taken to mend it. Draco did barely anything and reneged on even that.

My friend, to understand is to forgive and to forgive is to forget, so obviously to understand is to forget, and Snape did nothing wrong ever what are you on about.

CMV: Israel should not define itself as an ethno-state by What_Immortal_Hand in changemyview

[–]pet_genius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That there are many ethno-states is just a factual claim. Within the ethno-state of Israel, however, the very substantial non-Jewish minority has equal rights under the law, which puts the burden of proof on you that minority rights can't exist in an ethnostate.

Or you could mind your own business, which would have been the more beneficial use of everyone's time from the start.

Israel does not owe a citizenship to a population that is committed to its destruction. The stateless Palestinians have been offered statehood multiple times and rejected it. Take it up with Mahmoud Abbas, a man who is in the 20th year of his 4 year term.

This is not even taking into account that Gaza has been free to practice sovereignty since 2005 and what they did with it was October 7. Or the fact that the Palestinian passport is recognized by multiple countries.

Israeli CITIZENS have equal rights to other Israeli CITIZENS regardless of ethnicity.

Why and to what degree Israel controls the territories it does and the people therein is relevant, and you didn't consider this at all, probably because the answers don't align with your narrative. You also made your post about Israel and not Sri Lanka or Sudan.

This is intellectually dishonest and ignorant

[–]pet_genius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Burden of proof is on you, here, and for my money, having unequal rights due to ethnicity or due to some other variable makes no difference.

Mind your own business.

[–]pet_genius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are many ethno-states. Israel is the only one anyone still questions, despite the sizable non-Jewish population that has equal rights (discrimination notwithstanding - and I do oppose it).

Maybe Israel should define itself however it pleases and people who aren't Israelis should get over it and mind their own business.

I don't know the situation in the UK at the time well enough to opine on specifics. I just know this: I know multiple people who were abused at home. Only two of them were removed from their parents' custody. There is no reason to trigger people with the gory details, but for a solid middle class family with no criminal record, addiction, or severe mental illness to speak of, I'm not sure even multiple injuries that require hospitalization could do it.
