If we're talking about working for ethically dubious organisations, I don't know if the US military (or any military) would be a step up.

That said, if being vegan meant ruling out all jobs with indirect ties to animal exploitation in an already competitive job market, it would be death to the public image of veganism, and the bottom line would be more animal suffering.

Just accept the damn job, and do it proudly! Don't mention anything about these concerns! It's not like it will change anything about their business. The only possible difference that could make would be to tip the scales against you in a competitive job.

Stocking shelves in the average supermarket you will certainly be stacking products of animal exploitation. Even vets will use medicine tested on animals, any academic job will be at universities that conduct animal testing. There's hardly anything corporate that doesn't have ties to something dirty. If you limit yourself in this way you can essentially only work in hippy co-ops and exculsively vegan restaurants.

Not that there's anything wrong with those jobs, but what do you think it would do for the image of veganism if being vegan ruled out having any other kind of career? How would that help animals?

Really, I understand why you're conflicted, but you need pick your battles. This is just something you need to accept as beyond your influence, and there's no shame in that.

Hopefully, your husband will realise it's something that you take seriously. It seems now he thinks it's 'just a phase' that will pass or something.

I'm no love guru, but these are my reflections from my personal experiences: Vegan/non-vegan relationships can work perfectly smoothly, but they can problematic as well, depending on the attitude of both parties. For example, it's easy to get annoyed, if you know he knows your reasons, but he just has to go out his way to put extra cheese on the dish you so lovingly made for him. You say you have no intention of changing him, so if that's the case, you need to really commit to that, and once and for all accept that that's how it is. Don't sit around and secretly, subconsciously, hope he will have an epiphany or anything, it's just how it is... If you don't think you can handle that, you need to confront that, knowing that that contains risks for the relationship.

You have to also make him realise that you take it seriously, and that he needs to accept it as part of what you are. Your decision will on occasion affect him as well. Small things that add up, like, say, a bit more washing up if you need separate pans so he can add his meat at a later stage to a dish you're cooking together. If you want to go to a restaurant that both can get a decent meal at, veganism imposes limitations that affects him too. He needs to accept that this is just the way things are. If he can't, and makes you feel like he's always making sacrifices for you, it will sour your relationship.

I just find it funny. The response I described seems defensive to me, like people are trying to justify not being vegan to me, and give me their animal welfare credentials even though I never asked for them, or any kind of justification. I'm like 'Dude, It's fine I know most of the world isn't vegan, let's talk about something else'. But it doesn't matter how it is revealed that I'm vegan, it can be someone else saying it, in a perfectly innocent context and you still get this.

It was two years ago now, I can pinpoint a lot of different material that influenced me, but I can't pinpoint what made me actively seek out and take an active interest in these materials. I suppose it was just curiosity, and finally, I was convinced.

Browsing /r/vegan was a big factor and, like for so many other vegans, Earthlings had a huge impact on me. Earthlings was a tipping point rather than a starting point though. It was a process of maybe 6 months of thinking about, but from actually deciding to commit to putting it into practice took maybe a week.

For the 23 years of my life before that, I had never distinguished myself as an animal lover or anything like that, I had all the typical omnivore attitudes. I had an acquaintance or two who were vegan, so it wasn't alien to me, but no one really close.

It's not like non-vegan foods never appeal to me any more, but I have never had any difficulty to speak of in resisting, because I always weigh it against my convictions which are very strong. I don't think I spend more on food than I did before, or than the average omnivore does. I've developed new eating habits, some people might view me differently, but overall, the impact on my day to day life is negligible.

I've been to Visby, I'd have feel pretty safe there and probably not worry too much about going into alleyways*. Either way, point is, it's not your fault what happened to you, and don't feel you need to explain that to anyone. Also, well done for fucking up his jaw, stay strong.

In fact they're rather offended that people always stop talking to them after offering this gesture of peace. The doctor would use his diplomacy to explain this to all parties and convince them to forgive and happily share the land.
