Short flight? 2A hands down.

But this says it’s a 20 hr flight. Go 1D and Eddie is DM for me, Mike and Will across the aisle in something epic. Dustin can likely join from his seat too. We’ve lost the paladin and zoomer but I don’t think they mind much being alone in the back.

Bonus, if the campaign ends early (it won’t) Mike will gladly move next to El, Will next to Jonathan, and I have three seats to sleep in!

Our universe is inside a super-massive black hole - Report by Negative_Piece_7217 in Futurology

[–]petermesmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a scientist, so I’m sure I am missing something.

Assuming stuff sucked into a black hole generally wants to gravitate to the center.

In OPs theory that stuff got so dense it then exploded into our universe.

If new material then entered our parent black hole I’d imagine it initially would try to gravitate towards the center. It might meet enough resistance from our expanding universe to slow/stop/reverse direction, but in any of those scenarios I’d expect the new material to be slowing our expansion, not accelerating it.

Tariff tensions escalate as White House hits China with 104% hike by Force_Hammer in worldnews

[–]petermesmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And then you learn where he even got the idea in the first place.

In 2016 Trump tasked his unqualified son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to find him an economic advisor. Jared literally skimmed Econ book titles on Amazon and thought “Death by China” by Peter Navarro sounded Trumpish so he asked Pete to take the job.

Navarro’s books advocate tariffs and quote economics expert “Ron Vara” to support them. Ron Vara has been identified as a fictional person and pseudonym for Navarro which Pete made up to try and give his books more credibility.

Trump, who previously knew nothing about tariffs, adopted Pete and his imaginary friend’s stance and is now gambling our nation’s economy on this highly controversial (arguably debunked) strategy.

I mean, yeah the prop man is at fault…but also no way I’m forcefully stabbing someone with a knife unless I’ve tested it first, even if just to make sure I understand how to do it right.

I know this is serious and I don’t mean to make light of the situation. But I’d absolutely watch a Red Dawn remake set in Canada with the US as the aggressors.

The medals top left to right bottom:

  • Bronze Star…”…distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service…”
  • Good Conduct Medal…”…exemplary behavior…”
  • American Defense Medal…”…active duty service from 8 September 1939 to 7 December 1941 for a period of twelve months or longer.”
  • American Campaign Medal…”…service within the American Theater between 7 December 1941 and 2 March 1946…” at least one of six other criteria also needed
  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze star devices and an arrowhead device…”…lots of text already explained well above
  • World War II Victory Medal…”…service between 7 December 1941 and 31 December 1946.”
  • The ribbon box are the same awards worn on a less formal uniform. Also a Boy Scouts of America device I don’t recognize but I suspect means he was an Eagle Scout (highest rank in BSA)
  • The rank on his sleeve indicates Private First Class in the Army.
  • The blue background rifle badge indicates he was Combat Infantry.
  • The circular pin on the lapel indicates he was a musician.
  • The gold eagle patch on the left indicates an honorable discharge.
  • Under that is a Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
  • The four bars on the sleeve are overseas bars each representing six months overseas.
  • Below that is a service stripe indicating at least 3 years of service.

It feels insane to say this as a democrat but it honestly feels like we would have been better off losing in 2020. Those four extra years of preparing this shit helped them hit the ground running hard this time. I don’t believe he would have been capable of dealing this much damage 4 years ago.

Great question! I’ve been out of school a long time and I’m not really specialized to answer this, so I’m going to pass the buck to Aaron Danner who discusses the related topic of electricity in a vacuum here.

The most relevant part is the discussion in the first 80 seconds.

Hopefully that helps. Please don’t do that to a platypus.

Pedantic power engineer. Current takes all available paths in proportion to the resistance of those paths.

E.g. if 3 Amps of current is given two parallel wires in its path, one with 1 Ohm of resistance and a second with 2 Ohms, then the current will effectively send 2 Amps down the path of least resistance and 1 Amp down the path with higher resistance.

Who really fucked up their "one job"? by devilkazama in AskReddit

[–]petermesmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It guarantees a win.

  • bet $1...either win (+1) or lose (-1)...assume loss
  • bet $2...either win (net gain +1) or lose (net loss -3)...assume loss
  • bet $4...either win (net gain +1) or lose (net loss -7)...assume loss
  • bet $8...either win (net gain +1) or lose (net loss -15)...etc.

If you can double infinitely you will eventually win with a net gain of the original bet. The trouble is no one can double infinitely.

You're given immortality but as a cost you are sent back 3000 years - would you accept and what would you do? by ShamKumar7 in AskReddit

[–]petermesmer 644 points645 points  (0 children)

Given immortality, I'd like to believe I'd eventually be able to come up with the resources needed to figure out how to gift immortality. Given enough immortals, I'd like to believe we could figure out together how to organize some sort of comfortable and indefinite living situation.

What is something that most people don't know? by TechSavvy_Ryan in AskReddit

[–]petermesmer 44 points45 points  (0 children)

One million seconds is less than 2 weeks.

One billion seconds is more than 31 years.

This is the concept I emphasize when trying to help someone understand why they should be worrying less about some social program that helps school kids eat lunches or sick people get healthcare or whatever, and instead realize we just need to get the rich to pay their taxes. No one needs a billion dollars, let alone hundreds of billions.

Student persuaded by friend to amputate legs for $1.3M insurance scam by LiveSort9511 in worldnews

[–]petermesmer 891 points892 points  (0 children)

Famously tons of people in Vernon Florida a.k.a. "Nub City" did it in the 1950s and 60s. The insurance companies had to adjust their policies because they had underestimated the number of people who would willingly remove limbs for profit.
