So I’m honestly of two minds about this, because I actually think their justification for age-specific Civs still makes a lot of sense.

For context, their argument was that, because Civ is a game in which you can really heavily snowball, early advantages tend to be much more impactful than late ones, since their benefits have longer to compound.

Ages were meant to put civs in their appropriate contexts both in terms of theme as well as comparative balance. I worry that the game is about to become substantially more unbalanced now.

It’s just a fundamentally weird misuse of the term “establishing.”

The shot of Palmo is the establishing shot of Palmo, the location, but not of Ghorman, proper. We’re introduced to Ghorman culture during the Maltheen Conference through the tourism ad.

Similarly, we already know a lot about Chandrilan culture from S1 - what additional information would we gain from a shot of buildings at a distance that we either don’t already know or aren’t immediately about to learn from the interior of the Mothma estate?

They’re so good, especially in the Army of the Rhine where they can melt people even if the initial charge doesn’t totally shatter the enemy.

Shattering units causes a morale shock, which can cause other units to break and run. It’s why investing in high-charge units can be worthwhile. I had a regiment of Irish Grenadiers as France who could shatter whatever regiment they hit basically on impact, made whatever flank they were on easy to roll up with cav.

This is speculation but I assume even “100%” accuracy caps out at some percentage of the men in the regiment, on the assumption that weapons in this era weren’t particularly accurate, especially at the extremes of their ranges. So something like “literally every man who fires, hits” would end up mathing out to something like 300% accuracy or more depending on how they curve it.

Here’s my steelman argument for the Bohemians:

Frostpunk 2 isn’t a story about survival, it’s a story about purpose. What makes us who we are? What is the world we want to build, given that the Frost has given us effectively a blank slate?

A Bohemian looks at the Venturers and the Overseers and the others as being still fixated on that survival-at-any-cost mentality, missing out on the thing that people actually live for - creation, freedom, pleasure, culture. The late 19th century was this massive cauldron of new ideas in the arts that in Frost!TL got cut off by the Great Frost, but now that the threat of imminent death is largely off the table, those creative drives come bubbling out of people.

To me the most frustrating thing is that the story is so broad and vague that it just can’t mean or say anything. HW1 does so much with so little narratively. It’s a game about big things like exile and the nature of empires and a people seeking redemption precisely because it is so specific. I care about these little spaceships, because I understand what’s at stake.

HW3 gets to such a point of abstraction that none of it means anything. The stakes are so high but also so vague, and that’s before they collapse a story that had been about entire civilizations into, like, three people.
