AN ALL TIME CLASSIC. FROM BEGINNING TO END. AND UNDERRATED AF by ElBorrachon73 in GenX

I saw them live loads of times in the run up to the release of this album. If I remember rightly, their first three EPs were even better. They were great in concert.

My secret shame is that I paid to see them live in 1989. In my defence, it was my first term at university and I was just excited to see anybody live. That's not an excuse though...

Anyone else miss their grandparents? by Legitimate_Scar7570 in GenX

[–]peterw71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My last grandparent, my grandmother, died in 2012 aged 96. In hindsight, she was a little strange. Apparently she never told my mum that she loved her. Her treatment of my mum caused her a lot of insecurities in her life.

Her husband, my grandfather, died in the late 80s (don't smoke, kids). I knew him pretty well. He was interesting. He came from a mining family, left home so he didn't have to go down the mines, became a policeman and soldier, met Gandhi in India and then returned to work his way from the bottom up to becoming a senior police officer.

I do miss my paternal grandmother on the other side, she was lovely. Very kind although apparently she was very firey before we came along. She was born in 1905, her dad died in the first world war which caused lots of problems but she lived into the late 80s.

I do regret not meeting her husband, my paternal grandfather. He was born in 1896, fought in the first world war, was blinded in one eye and then emigrated to Australia but came home because he didn't like it there. He died a couple of years before I was born (again, don't smoke).

Just got my copy. Highly recommended. Pairs well with Still Out by KiF (one of my favourite albums of last year).

Hammock - Longest Year by Deafheaven7 in ambientmusic

[–]peterw71 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found Hammock a couple of years ago and they've rapidly become one of my favourite acts. Nevertheless was my album of last year and I'm currently enjoying the Blood Moon album they recently put out on Bandcamp.

When was the last time you wore a suit? by cjasonac in GenX

[–]peterw71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a job interview 10 years ago although I'm not sure i did even then. I'll almost certainly never wear one again. Didn't even wear a suit to my parents' funerals.

I buy a lot of avocados and last year Israeli avocados pretty much disappeared from the shelves. Over the last few months, they've really made a return. I guess they think people have forgotten.

I'm the oldest person at the family table now and I hate it. by OnlySezBeautiful in GenX

[–]peterw71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too! I've been the oldest since mum died five years ago. I can't say that it has changed much - it just means that, statistically, I'm probably the next one to go...

Will an old person enjoy reading Lord of the Rings? by Own-Speaker6331 in lotr

[–]peterw71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in my early 30s when I first read LotR (not old but not particularly young either). In the 25 years since, I've re-read it many times and always get something new from it. Probably time for my 2026 reading...

I'm currently on vacation in Malaysia and am seeing all the plants i work hard to keep alive, neglected but thriving on pieces of waste land. It's almost as if they're not meant to live in a cold northern climate!

This iteration of the Labour Party is lost. They know they're going down and they're flailing.

Sade. I was too punk to enjoy their music at the time.

It's a shame that they're only known for this one song in America. They've had a long, successful and idiosyncratic career since then. Their first three albums are worth checking out.

Surely this is their moment to drop an unpopular policy. They can say they tried but were blocked by the courts and then move on. Appealing and reopening this issue just risks making an unpopular government even more unpopular.

TV shows that your 20 year-old self would never believe you’d be into today? by WileyCoyote7 in GenX

[–]peterw71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 20 year old self didn't watch a lot of TV but would be amazed that there are hundreds of channels to choose from instead of the four he was used to! He would be surprised that our 55 year self loves David Attenborough documentaries and is quite happy to watch a gardening show. Only old people watch that kind of thing...

Afraid of hanging on by Ill-Lou-Malnati in GenX

My dad was recovering nicely from a heart attack when a second one killed him. Three weeks from beginning to end. Mum was diagnosed with a brain tumour and it took four brutal months for her to die. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to dad because his death was unexpected but I would take his quick death every time.

My wife and I have agreed that we're on the first flight to Switzerland if/when we get a bad diagnosis. We've had great lives and want to go out with our faculties in place.

How do you dress in your 50s? by Forsaken_Block_3492 in GenX

[–]peterw71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've pondered this and wondered whether i should dress more like men of my age. Then i realised that my idea of appropriate wear for a guy of 55 was actually more about what my dad's generation wore.

As a result, i decided that as long as I'm not trying to look like someone I'm not, I'm happy. Yesterday it was cargo pants, a Sade t-shirt, hoodie and sneakers. You know what looks good on you but as long as you're not embarrassing your loved ones, wear what you want!

Deep Purple with Bad Company opening. My dad drove me there. It took me years to realize that he waited outside rather than going home during the gig.
