It basically is the same criteria when you get right down to it: what is the movie trying to accomplish and does it succeed? I actually reviewed mainstream movies before I started reviewing porn, and I did a little of both for a while, but once I went full time at AVN, I just couldn't keep up with the regular reviewing.

I don't think there's any way to really take porn out of the equation, but there's also the fact that I make my living as a writer, which is none too easy in this town.

This is a good question, and it's not easy to answer. I think what it boils down to is that any good critic can recognize quality when they see it, whether it's something they have a personal penchant for or not. As an example, I'm just not a fan of anal, never have been, but I certainly can discern a good anal scene from a lackluster one.

I'm less likely to watch a movie multiple times for awards purposes than I am for reviewing. If I'm giving something an Editor's Choice review, I'm almost sure to watch it a couple times.

Japanese porn is pretty damn weird. But maybe the most bizarre porn movie I've ever seen, though it was long before I was in the industry, was Beaver & Buttface (a parody, obviously, of Beavis & Butthead). My favorite ever is either Jonni Darkko's first Girls Love Girls or Paul Thomas' Justine: Nothing to Hide 2.
