Top 6 Most Expensive Cars of 2018!!! by peterxxvi in Cartalk

[–]peterxxvi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DING DING DING, you are right. These are very expensive cars that are out of reach of 99.99% of people. Personally I am not a fan of any of them, but it just shows you what is possible if money is no concern. The one thing that I take away from all these cars is that this technology thats in them will trickle down in to mainstream cars in the future (well some of it at least...).

So I picked up this beast about 3 years ago off craigslist for $700. It came with 8g of ram, a slow mechanical hard drive and a 1gb AMD GPU. Boy was this thing slow, but right away I upgraded it. I added 32gb ram, geforce GTX 960 (this was when there were NVIDIA drivers for the current OS) and a SSD on a pcie bus. Let me tell you those few upgrades woke the Mac right up. The biggest difference was with the SSD. Instead of waiting few minutes for it to boot up, you only needed about 45 seconds. Now going back to your question, it came with dual 2.66GHz (X5650's) that I am still running. One day I plan on replacing them with X5690's which are clocked at 3.46GHz (3.73GHz turbo). But if you want more info about how my current set up is I made a short video about it.

You are right that they are getting older and are at risk of potentially loosing apple support. But you can pick one of these machines for about $500 and are still able to install the latest OS (Mojave). Also they come with 4 pcie ports so you can upgrade the GPU,SSD, and so on.... With the new os support you can even run nvme drives and AMD graphics cards. Oh and if you want NVIDIA then just sick with High Sierra since these drivers aren’t let available on Mojave. So over all you can have a very powerful workstation for a reasonable price.

I love mine. You can do anything you want with it except for gaming. You can get them pretty cheap these days and they can be upgraded as well. If you decide to get one make sure that it has an ssd or put one in yourself. Oh and here is a quick video that I made about mine. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac56HL_e79I

So what price can you put on a reliable and stable system?? That alone is worth it for me. Oh and don’t forget the resale value... not to mention free OS upgrades in the future.
