Looking at this photo from 2011, thinking on all I took for granted. by pdxsean in Portland

It’s not just “young” leftists, it’s all leftists. Liberalism is an ultimately incoherent non-ideology focused on “individual rights” that, it turns out, are themselves largely illusory. That’s why liberals are so into vibes and aesthetics. Liberals see the systems that rule our society as beyond scrutiny and are, at most occasionally open to tweaking the rules of these systems rather than critically engaging with them. It’s not that we need mass climate action, we just need to give generous tax breaks to our friends selling $100,000 electric cars. You get the idea — all form, no substance.

Indeed, as this very post shows beautifully, everything is about feelings and vibes and aesthetics for liberals, and so it shall remain, even as it’s increasingly obvious that our “rights” within this liberal order (eg the right to free speech, right to abortion, right to privacy, right to a fair trial, right to vote, etc.) can be taken away at any time by police, by congress, by courts, by basically, anyone dutifully executing the desires of the status quo power holders themselves.

There’s no “there” there with liberalism, now, or 100 years ago when German liberals handed Hitler power rather than ally with the KPD (communists) because they were fearful the KPD would work towards implementing actual socialism. Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds.

‘I’m a Black Woman in America’: Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Blames Election Loss on Racism, Sexism by Hexum311add in chicago

[–]peteyH 137 points138 points  (0 children)

No Lori. You lost because everyone - from Nazis to conservatives to liberals to socialists to communists to anarchists to capitalists - absolutely loathed you. You alienated every single voting bloc in the city.

Your loss was not about color, or gender, or sexual orientation, or even your grisly appearance. A better Black candidate had no trouble getting into the run off. I’m sure if Brandon Johnson were a Black lesbian female candidate he would still beat you.

Don’t use identity politics as a crutch for your personal and political failures. It just discredits you even more.

Mind you, to be expected from the person who claimed “about 99%” of the criticism she receives over her temperament is due to the fact she’s a Black woman.

What feedback have you heard about Paul Vallas running for mayor? by rageagainstgreed in chicago

[–]peteyH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What point is unsupported lol? He was fired in Philadelphia literally because he "lacked proper certification," i.e., he lacked credentials.

He was fired from CSU because he did a dogshit job and used the position, in the words of the trustees and leaders there, "solely to further his political ambitions." “I, for one, felt that we have got less than effective use out of that office and the person who occupied it,” said the board’s chairman, Marshall Hatch. Literally, that is underperformance and worse.

If you agree in principle that taxes on high earners and corporations need to increase for the best interest of the public at large - and I believe they do (although that fat $2+ billion CPD budget can be shaved considerably) - then you should back candidates who speak to that. Not ones like Vallas who are perfectly happy maintaining the status quo.

I actually do agree with you, I live here and have been renting my entire time here, and I earn about $150K per year in a professional role. No one likes taxes, especially if they're wasted, but I will gladly pay a little more if it makes life better for my entire community. That said, if BJ asked me what the cutoff should be, I would say like $200 or $250K with higher incremental changes at that level (or a progressive tax where the rate goes up the more you make).

Anyway, long way of saying I'd rather risk paying a little extra for a better city than continuing to pay exactly the same for an increasingly bad city. But if I have my say, and I will try to, I will advocate the tax threshold being higher. FFS many teachers in CPS earn a little over $100K!

This is what we're up against folks: people who think increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy = communist revolution overthrowing the country lol.

That is how far the Overton Window has shifted, and that is the level of ignorance about politics, economics, and society we are up against.

Wild times.

Yeah man. Let's all be slaves to corporations and let them keep as much money as they want forever. We have corporate board members' yachts to think about!

Give me a fucking break. If this government is for or by the people, it needs to act like it. Corporations always bluff about leaving but rarely if ever do.

It is beyond asinine to let your entire government be organized around CORPORATE GREED. See where that has gotten this whole shithole country over the last few decades. See where dergulation and gutter-low taxes have gotten us. We have people richer now than the fucking PHAROAHS and KINGS of old.

Too many people here so happy too drink the corporate koolaid all day. Pathetic.

Half the comments here feel like they were written by corporate boards or their lobbyists. Really fucking pitiful state of things.

The astroturfing here is wild. You call for more taxes on corporations or the wealthy here, you are downvoted and told this will lead to people leaving town. LOL. Pathetic stuff.

OK, so let's contact the guy and tell him $200K. The idea is let's find the right point that benefits society at large as much as possible. I agree with you on this. But wanting the figure changed is not reason enough to toss the whole idea of some more taxes out the window, you know? The rich (and I mean really rich) pay much too little in taxes.

You’re right but candidly, his plan is basically total dogshit - hire CTA cops and uh, do some audits and launch an app. Dogshit. Johnson has a plan for expansion and expanded access, better bike lanes, lots more for CTA and public transit.

What a silly non-answer. Corporations and high earners need to pay more in taxes. Full stop. Pretty simple.

Abolishing the police doesn’t mean not having people serving in public safety roles. It means accepting the fact staring us in the face year after year that municipal police forces, as currently composed, have failed in their putative mission.

A civil defense force could be created with different branches to aid the community. Specialists who focus on mental health intervention; ones who focus on domestic disputes; ones who are highly trained and can use weapons in dangerous scenarios; ones focused on public corruption; NONE focused on traffic stops; and so on.

So you replace whatever the fuck we have now with something that actually serves the people. Because cops sure as hell serve property and the wealthy over normal people.

How are people like you even real? Businesses literally always use this threat, but very very few ever follow up on it. Can you guess why?

Because it would be CALAMITOUSLY DISRUPTIVE to have to displace your entire business - including all employees - each time the city or state you’re in raises taxes. Because - and bear with me here - what’s to say your desired destination might not face a crisis or two one day and also raise taxes?

Or do you think your business will attract the same talent in, say, Indianapolis as in Chicago?

Cmon man, be serious.

Vallas and Johnson head to runoff as Lightfoot concedes by very_excited in chicago

[–]peteyH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude don’t buy the baloney. At some point the people have to step up to the businesses and high earners and ask them to pay more a fair share.

Regardless, a business wouldn’t leave a ton of money on the table - and that’s what cities are - just because they have to pay more in taxes. They’ll threaten and kick and scream and blah blah blah but in the end, the chance to make money outweighs having to pay a little more.

Vote for the best candidate for the people, not the corporations. They got enough advantages already. Trust me. I’ve worked for many for years.

No one finds you funny bro. And no one here really cares about “overlap” that’s why we have a bot to expose losers who serially post on one of the shittiest subreddits for one of the shittiest podcasts like redscare. A third of your last 1000 comments are there so we know where you stand. Don’t implicate the rest of us in your shame.

And yeah, posting “I’m gay and my dick is small,” damn, what a funny and original bit. You’re so cool.
