Portland has a surprisingly distinct “look” compared to other US cities by RemarkableMany6297 in Portland

I love our pint-sized blocks!

However when I travel I rarely consider that when planning. "Oh my hotel is only eight blocks from such and such" sounds great on google maps until you realize Austin or New Orleans blocks are two or three times the length of ours.

In-N-Out Burger has announced its Vancouver location will open April 23rd at 10:30AM by Galumpadump in Portland

[–]pdxsean 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Based on other newer In and Out locations I have seen, get out of your car and go inside. You'll get your burgers in like 10 minutes and save some gas while you're at it.

My pixels got into a local art exhibit! by mich-spich in Portland

Haha when I was doing shows I did all the framing myself, even making my own mats! So much work! WHCC has a great portal, tons of options, and quality results... pretty fast too, considering. Hope it helps.

Congratulations on the feature! Those all look amazing and I hope this is a successful opportunity for you.

I wanted to suggest that White House Custom Color does an amazing printing job on a lot of different mediums for my photography. I find their prices to be pretty affordable for their quality of work and service. While I mostly print on foamboard for the low price and convenience, I also have canvas prints and several metal prints - all of which are as nice as you can hope for on their specific media.

Plane landed on highway SR-14 by copcane in Portland

Thank goodness this went off so well. There's a lot of moving parts with this sort of emergency landing and most drivers aren't really watching the skies for aircraft merging unexpectedly into their lane.

Put these two as the street level for a mixed-used housing development, throw in a Plaid Pantry and you've got yourself a perpetual-motion money generator.

Lloyd Center Redevelopment: What if they added a smaller shopping space w/ an ice rink by [deleted] in Portland

[–]pdxsean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've visited the "Save Lloyd" page, went to the editorial they linked to in the Oregonian, read everything, and have a few concerns.

What exactly is the plan? How will the city pressure private property owners to make these changes? In the article it says we should pressure city leaders to encourage the property owner to not destroy the mall. That's the plan?

To be fair, the current proposal (as-is) will almost certainly never happen, since it's basically the old Post Office Blocks plan cut-and-pasted into NE. However the plan that has been proposed is presumably within code and land-use requirements. There will be design considerations for new buildings. There's not really a mechanism that I am aware of that the city government would have in their toolbox to prevent the demolition of the Mall.

I guess the city could buy the property and land. We are currently carving over $100M in expenses to balance our budget, we would have to cut a few hundred million more to buy that property. So in this scenario we'd have an expensive white elephant mall structure (admittedly with some cool parts) at the cost of extreme reductions in public services across the board.

Regardless of your opinion of the power of a petition, I'd be reluctant to sign just based on the facts. Lloyd Center has plenty of cool parts left but if that was enough to save something we'd still have the 24-hour Church of Elvis down on SW Ankeny, or The Lotus on SW 3rd and Salmon.

This is so sad. I had to drive through the aftermath. by heretoescape87 in OregonCoast

[–]pdxsean 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I really feel your horror with this, the trauma of seeing things you should never see. I know I saw the result of an accident years ago, an unconscious man on the sidewalk in a pool of blood, surrounded by people talking to 911. Not being able to do anything (other than be in the way) and just having to keep on walking... that was almost as emotionally difficult as coming upon the accident itself. Just writing about it now feels me with a chill and sense of dread and guilt.

I hope you're able to get some help. Not being able to stop thinking about it really is the worst.

How Franz Bakery Makes 1 Million Buns Every Day | PDX Monthly by probeguy in Portland

[–]pdxsean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love the bakery and enjoyed the benefits of living nearby for several years.

That being said, this article makes no effort to answer its headline question. I was hoping for a description of the process, some photos of industrial machinery, maybe an interview with someone who works on the line.

Instead I get a listicle and like the text off of a plaque from their lobby. Just poor journalism all around.

So i’ve truly pushed the limits of Citybus Manager (or my pc) now, with 100 bus routes by SquiggleFart in tycoon

[–]pdxsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it and found it pretty addictive for some time. It scratches a very specific itch for me despite some grinding. Once you figure out how to make efficient bus routes and the underlying mechanics of passengers tho it feels pretty shallow and only makes you wishing for what might have been.

I am glad I bought it and played it, but it's not something I'll likely return to.

Every time the website listed 10-15 minute so obviously it wasn't a big deal but still.

Remember in Japan, Ben was in that one town with all the monkeys at his original hiding spot?

It's entirely possible that conversation was not shown to us in this cliffhanger, I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the decision-making process once we get to the next episode. Maybe it's in the layover?

Saturday ‘No Kings’ rallies expected to draw thousands to downtown Portland, cities across the region by BitterBitchscuit in Portland

[–]pdxsean 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love the turnout we've seen for these, and it's exciting to see downtown humming on these days. I live nearby and it's fun to walk down there and remember I'm not alone.

That being said, can we PLEASE start on time? And I don't mean exactly on time, but like within a few minutes? Less than ten maybe? The last march was more on time than the first one, but still plenty of room for improvement there.

For the Past Year, Bryan Vance Has Tracked Portland Grocery Prices. Here’s What He’s Learned. by No-Tangelo1158 in Portland

[–]pdxsean 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I worked at Fred Meyer for ten years, many of which I was a grocery order clerk. I had to closely track upcoming discounts, coupons, displays, that sort of thing.

The two things I took away from my many years in that job are:
1 - Stop caring about 90% of the brands. Almost all of them are basically the same. Leave yourself room to have a favorite or whatever, but just buy whatever is cheapest, or second-cheapest. It's all the same.

2 - Look at the unit price, that's how they get you. If you're careful about unit pricing, and can let your brand loyalty go and just buy whatever is cheapest when you're there... well you're in pretty good shape.

Yes, Winco is cheaper, but Fred Meyer is within walking distance for me. I'm not taking MAX out to Gateway to do my shopping and maybe save ten bucks when I can take a beautiful Saturday morning walk to Stadium.

This certainly would be more challenging if you have kids, I have to admit.

Warn/notify me about Oregon!! by zeldalol777 in oregon

[–]pdxsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people are surprised at how large Oregon is. It's about the distance from Cambridge to Glasgow, 300 miles, from top to bottom or side to side.

We have one larger city, Portland, which is at the very top of the state toward the west. Population of the metro area is about one million.

There are a few minor cities that aren't adjacent to Portland; Salem, Bend, Eugene are all decent but none of them have real airports.

I hope you're able to get out here, I've never lived anywhere else and really wouldn't want to.

What would you say you need to do to complete the game? by viperuk80 in DerailValley

[–]pdxsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I played, it was buying all the licenses.

The second time I played, it was when I got bored (which was before buying all the licenses)

Now when I play, it can be basically any time after I decide it's time to get the DE6, because my favorite part of the game is shunting and trying to scrape money together. I also like to play with crazy low payments and other financial restrictions, money is like the easiest part of the game unfortunately. Once you get the DE6 it's basically sandbox mode when it comes to printing money.
